TODAY! Head to Vienna today (Aug. 29) for an amazing living history event, the Battle of Vienna! Here's what you need to know...

⚔️ One ticket. Two locations. More than 200 years of Dorchester County history brought to life.

The Battle of Vienna Living History Event commemorates the British raids that brought the American Revolution right to the banks of the Nanticoke River. From 10am-4pm, the story unfolds at two locations, just 1.5 miles apart:

🏛️ AT HISTORIC HANDSELL: Step inside a Revolutionary-era military encampment, watch musket demonstrations and traditional crafts, hear colonial music, meet living history interpreters, explore the Handsell house and Chicone Village, and learn about the Indigenous cultures connected to this land.

⛵ ALONG THE VIENNA WATERFRONT: See a replica 18th-century vessel, explore maritime history and exhibits, hear sea songs performed by the Ship’s Company Chanteymen, see remains of a colonial shipwreck discovered in the Nanticoke River, tour historic homes and buildings, visit local history exhibits, and find games, art and activities for all ages.
Throughout the day, look for blacksmithing, woodworking, spinning and rug-hooking demonstrations; Revolutionary War interpreters including Ned Hector and William Vans Murray; food vendors; children's activities; music; and more.

What makes this event especially interesting: the history happened here. British vessels repeatedly raided Vienna and sites along the Nanticoke between 1779 and 1782, when the river was both an important commercial route and a setting for Revolutionary War conflict.

📅 Saturday, Aug. 29 | 10am-4pm
📍 Handsell Historic Site + Vienna waterfront
🎟️ $10 admission covers both locations; reduced ticket prices for families with kids. Buy tix in Vienna at the Customs House (Water & Church Streets – and peek inside!), the Toll House (follow signs), or at Handsell, 4837 Indiantown Rd., Vienna.

Come spend the day in Vienna and experience a chapter of Revolutionary War history that unfolded right here on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Boat docking contests have hit the big time – the Wall Street Journal ran a story all about them! And yes, that's Dorchester County's own Sydney Hughes ("Dock it Like a Girl" is her motto) and her boat Wild Child in the photos. You can read the story if you register for free with the WSJ at on.wsj.com/4x0xxgd.

Dorchester County has four boat docking contests coming up:
🚤 Taylors Island Boat Docking Challenge - Aug. 30
🚤 Jon Boat Docking Contest at Warwick Riverfest - Sept. 6
🚤 Waterman’s Rodeo—Hoopers Island Boat Docking Contest - Sept. 13
🚤 Extreme Boat Docking Contest - Sept. 20

If you're not familiar with boat docking contests, experienced workboat and charter captains race the clock as they maneuver their boats in reverse and back into tight slips at high speed. Once the boat comes to a stop, the crew must quickly secure it by lassoing four dockside poles. The fastest successful run takes the prize. These crowd-pleasing competitions have been drawing thousands of spectators to Eastern Shore waterfronts for nearly 50 years.
