To Our Fellow Americans,

The Harvard Republican Club is the nation’s oldest collegiate Republican organization, and during our history we have reaped the benefits of American freedom, values, and prosperity. Thus, we believe it is our duty to propel ideas and people that will keep American greatness aflame for future generations while grappling with our historical faults. With these principles in mind, we endorse Donald Trump in his 2020 presidential candidacy.

After spirited conversation, our board has concluded that President Trump upheld many of his campaign promises to unwaveringly press for the interests of all Americans. Our conservative and Republican convictions compel us to endorse candidates that will fight for an enduring moral order, protect Americans traditions, and prize careful prudence in all decisions for the betterment of Americans. President Trump has demonstrated a commitment to these ideals that surpasses his challenger former Vice President Biden. Biden’s platform and party have in many areas abandoned truth in favor of a radicalized view of relative reality. This risks injuring our entire society, with concentrated harm occurring to the most vulnerable. Contrastingly, President Trump has propelled American prosperity through several marquee accomplishments listed below ranging from foreign policy to tax reform. It is this track record that gives us confidence in the President’s abilities going forward.

Despite these achievements, we want to utilize this election to also provide our President and all our elected officials with feedback. We should not be afraid to criticize any elected official, even if they are of the same party. We celebrate the debate and growth inherent in the election process and look forward to the ideas generated by the national discourse.

Attached to this document is a succinct list of the President’s accomplishments and promises that warranted our endorsement. Additionally, we have included a list of shortcomings we hope are addressed in the President’s second term. However, it is our sincere hope that whoever holds the White House going forward will succeed in championing truth, reason, and simply doing what is right for the nation.

God Bless America,

// Signed //

🇺🇸 Happy Independence Day! Now more than ever, it is important to celebrate what makes America the land of the FREE and the home of the BRAVE. Our ceaseless commitment to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — even if it means taking a hard look inward— is what we celebrate today. Nobody knew this better than Frederick Douglass, an American abolitionist and statesman. Below are some quotes from his Fourth of July speech, and we encourage everyone to read the full text. Fighting for something better, despite making mistakes (even grave ones) along the way, defines the American spirit inherent in the Fourth of July. Have a good night and God bless America! 🇺🇸

“Citizens, your fathers made good that resolution. They succeeded; and to-day you reap the fruits of their success. The freedom gained is yours; and you, therefore, may properly celebrate this anniversary. The 4th of July is the first great fact in your nation’s history — the very ring-bolt in the chain of your yet undeveloped destiny.”

“I have said that the Declaration of Independence is the ring-bolt to the chain of your nation’s destiny; so, indeed, I regard it. The principles contained in that instrument are saving principles. Stand by those principles, be true to them on all occasions, in all places, against all foes, and at whatever cost.”

“Fellow Citizens, I am not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were brave men. They were great men too — great enough to give fame to a great age. It does not often happen to a nation to raise, at one time, such a number of truly great men. The point from which I am compelled to view them is not, certainly, the most favorable; and yet I cannot contemplate their great deeds with less than admiration. They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for, I will unite with you to honor their memory.”

“Allow me to say, in conclusion, notwithstanding the dark picture I have this day presented of the state of the nation, I do not despair of this country. There are forces in operation, which must inevitably work the downfall of slavery. “The arm of the Lord is not shortened,” and the doom of slavery is certain. I, therefore, leave off where I began, with hope. While drawing encouragement from the Declaration of Independence, the great principles it contains, and the genius of American Institutions, my spirit is also cheered by the obvious tendencies of the age.”

The Harvard Crimson is calling for the abolition of the Harvard Police Department. See how this can hurt students.

“(1/6) This article brings up good points like the lack of transparency within private police departments. However! Calls for abolition of HUPD are EXTREMELY dangerous for students. HUPD is *designed* and paid for by Harvard to protect, guess what, Harvard students. https://t.co/jFk4eMR8YM”

A Statement regarding the death of George Floyd:

To All Those Concerned,

The Harvard Republican Club stands outraged at the disregard for civil liberties and due process in the murder of George Floyd. We believe in the sanctity of life and the responsibility of the government to protect it. George Floyd’s murder represents an abuse of the power entrusted to the government and its officers. Moreover, racism is fundamentally unjust and should be opposed relentlessly. The following protests accord with The HRC’s and the Republican Party’s enduring commitment to liberty and justice for all.

America has a long history of citizens protesting unfair laws and injustice. We support the rights of peaceable assembly as the First Amendment enunciates them. Unfortunately, many businesses and individuals were injured alongside protests for equality. However, the violence and damage, while unequivocally wrong, should not detract from the inequity of George Floyd’s death or the message of the protest.

The legal maxim “Abuse does not take away use” dictates that peaceful protests not be lumped in with rioters. It also dictates that good police officers--the vast majority-- not be lumped in with the criminals. We entreat both law enforcement and protesters to practice understanding and patience. We thank both the police officers and citizens who follow these principles of conduct and act as lights in a dark hour.

We are committed to crafting solutions that protect black lives. Through conversations, policy advocacy, and donating a third of our current funds to charities that focus on research and those affected, HRC hopes to advance individual liberty, due process, racial equality, and justice. It’s time for Republicans to directly confront this issue, and we are duty bound to lead the way with thoughtful and fact-based policies. This crisis will be solved by deploying a spirit of justice and understanding inherent in the fabric of America.

Respectfully,

The Harvard Republican Club

This is part of a series that encourages members of the Harvard Republican Club to speak up about their views on social media and in their communities. This post does not express an official club position of the Harvard Republican Club but rather the opinion of one of its members.

"Like freedom of speech, access to fi****ms is currently an essential and constitutional right. Despite one's opinions on gun rights, it would be extremely concerning if civil rights were stripped by executive action at any level of government. I am very glad that the White House recommended that cities and states not interfere with civil liberties despite the Coronavirus and allow gun stores to remain open. While we need to be doing all we can to protect each other and flatten the curve, trading our constitutional rights without due process for temporary security is a dangerous precedent."
