It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of former PBHA volunteer, civil rights advocate, child psychiatrist, Harvard professor, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Dr. Robert Coles.
In 2007, PBHA established the Robert Coles “Call of Service” Lecture & Award, which invites a significant figure in public service to campus each year to inspire a commitment to service and draw attention to important social issues. His book, The Call of Service, highlights the values of compassion, responsibility, and idealism that PBHA seeks to foster among its volunteers and will continue to do so in his memory.
For 18 years, through the lecture, Dr. Coles helped bridge the gap between public service and students at Harvard University and beyond. We are deeply grateful for the opportunities, conversations, and connections that grew from his extraordinary work and lifelong dedication to service. His impact shaped generations of PBHA students, community partners, and award recipients, and his legacy will continue to inspire those committed to building a more compassionate and just world.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives were touched by his wisdom and generosity.
