Today is the 19th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. We hope that everyone can take a few minutes to remember those we lost that day and reflect on the impact this event continues to have on our country. This tragedy changed the life trajectory of many in our AFC community, some on the day itself, others in the months and years that followed, sending them--as service members, diplomats, officials, and contractors--far from home to respond. On this day we are grateful to those who answered the call, in and out of uniform, on September 11, 2001 and since, from the cabin of Flight 93 to Ground Zero to the Hindu Kush and beyond, to protect the country and its people.

For those who lost someone on this day nineteen years ago, you and your families are in our thoughts.

Welcome back AFC! We hope everyone had a great summer and is excited for the start of the fall semester! A little about us: We are the student-led organization for veteran and active duty students, and anyone interested in defense and veterans issues at HKS.

Our first event of the year is TODAY, 31 Aug! Join us for an AFC Student Panel - Navigating Defense & National Security Opportunities at HKS from 3:30 - 4:00 pm at the zoom link here: https://harvard.zoom.us/j/6881557520. It will be an informal panel event discussing the numerous, exciting opportunities available at HKS in the defense and national security space. Our second-year panel will describe their experiences, classes, opportunities found and lessons learned, and will answer any of your questions. If you know you’re interested in the defense and/or national security space, but aren’t sure yet where to look, what electives to shop and whom to talk to, please join us!

Hi Team! Check out www.Livelyhood.io, a new platform developed by one of our AFC Veterans. The platform aims to protect the most vulnerable during this crisis by empowering community sourced volunteers to help this population with simple errands.

LivelyHood is a safe and simple platform that connects healthy, young volunteers with elderly and immunocompromised individuals who need help running errands. Our mission is to help diminish the impact of the pandemic by enabling the most vulnerable among us to stay safe in their homes.

We're looking for you to join our first team of volunteers in Boston. All you have to do is run a few extra errands the next time you make a trip to the grocery store or pharmacy, followed by a ‘no contact’ delivery to a requester in your local community. You decide when and how much to volunteer. Every little bit counts.

We are looking for volunteers who are between 18-40, healthy without pre-existing conditions, asymptomatic, and have been practicing social distancing. Once we’ve built a foundation of volunteers, we’ll open up our platform for errand requests from those who need help in Boston. The sooner we get volunteers, the sooner we can start helping those in need.

We all have an important role to play in fighting the spread of COVID-19. When times get tough, we come together.

Want to watch Army take on Michigan today?

Join members of our Rockbound Highland Home in watching Army take on Michigan in football at noon on Saturday, 7 September at 730 Tavern in Central Square (730 Massachusetts Ave in Cambridge). It’s a great sports bar, wide open with tons of TVs (food/drink on your own). The tavern opens at 11am and the game starts at 12, so come and go as you want! Wear your Army spirit gear and bring the family. Go Army! Beat Michigan!
