Get Back in the Groove. Volunteer for ACTIVIST AFTERNOONS in Cambridge

Many Helping Hands 365 is excited to work with our partners at Activist Afternoons and MBK to support civic engagement in Cambridge. By carving out some time each week for civic action and volunteering, each of us has the power to improve our communities and our government and make significant progress on persistent challenges to our democracy.

History of Activist Afternoons: From 2018 to 2020, Activist Afternoons met at a co-working space in Central Square to provide a dedicated time and space for civic engagement where volunteers could take action. Every Sunday from 4-6 pm, attendees chose from a menu of causes and actions to help move our politics forward on all levels, from the neighborhood-level to the White House.

Help Wanted: We’re looking for individuals to help with event planning and organization as we return to hosting events virtually and in-person! Specifically, we’re looking for help with outreach coordination, meeting facilitation, event management, and event promotion. Please let us know if you’d be willing to help us get Activist Afternoons off the ground in 2021 by emailing us at [email protected]

Activist Afternoons Spring 2021:
Beginning on Earth Week, Activist Afternoons will resume operation. The following events will be held online. (All activities will be held between 4-6pm via Zoom.)

April 25th: Local environmental groups will host activities to celebrate Earth Week.
May 9th: Local women’s groups will host activities to celebrate Mothers Day.
May 30st: Commemorate Veterans Day with projects to help veterans

Activist Afternoons Summer 2021:
Activist Afternoons will resume operations outdoors. Location to be announced.

About the candidate: Danika Fornear is running for State House in Florida. She is a hardworking, single mom with a diverse background. She was an alligator wrestler just out of high school, spent time as a domestic violence and sexual assault victim advocate, and even joined her local fire department and worked her way up from rookie to engineer. She currently works as a a journalist, covering important stories in rural SWFL communities, and is known for writing about SWFL’s battle for clean water and powerful social justice articles.

You may be wondering: How are these virtual events doing? Who's got time to do this with everything going on? Well, last Sunday was our first pass of turning activities "virtual", and thanks to our fabulously flexible organizers and some creativity, we did it!

Swing Left Greater Boston "Reclaim Our Vote": We had 25 postcard "kit" pickups - that's 750 postcards that are getting written at home during this time of social distancing!

Swing Left Greater Boston "Vote by Mail": We had 16 postcard "kit" pickups to encourage constituents to vote by mail. That's 480 constituents that are going to receive a vote by mail card in their mailbox!

Sister District MA-RI Harold Hayes: There were 13 callers that made 518 dials and talked to 52 voters. Messaging included language about COVID-19 that were used to reassure voters that safety measures were being taken at polling places. Patrick Joyce, one of the organizers, ran the phonebank "party" over Zoom, and at the end of the call, everyone on Zoom gave tallies of how many total dials and contacts. SD even had some first-timers turn into enthusiastic phone-bankers!
