The Cambridge Fire Department was established by an act of the state legislature on March 17, 1832 with a suppression force of 6 engines and 1 ladder truck. Today the Department is a professional organization which provides fire protection, emergency medical service, heavy rescue service, and protection to the environment. The Cambridge Fire Department is staffed by 274 sworn members and 8 civilia

n members under command of Chief Engineer Gerard E. The Department is a member of Boston Metrofire, the Boston area mutual aid network. Thirty-four cities and towns, including Massport, participate in Metrofire. The Department consists of 2 Fire Suppression Divisions and 4 Staff Divisions. Suppression companies operate from 8 fire houses strategically located throughout the city. The Fire Investigation Unit investigates undetermined, suspicious, and incendiary fires. The sworn members of the department maintain membership in Local 30, International Association of Firefighters, Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts, AFL/CIO/CLC. Firefighter Safety/PPE maintenance:
All Cambridge Fire PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is in the process of being inspected, washed via the extractor, dried, repaired if needed, reinspected, & placed back in service per NFPA standards.
All CFD members have at least 2 sets of PPE.
Thank you to Redline Gear Cleaning for professionally completing the process in real time during the month of June, 2026, on-site at Station 3.

Engine 8 (originally Combination No. 1) was established on 5 June 1905 in a new fire house at 113 Garden Street.

This morning, June 4th, companies particpated in another segment of the continuing combined evolutions training regimen.
Scenarios included the hands-on review of forcible entry, search & rescue of a simulated victim, pump operation, stretching an attack line via the stairs, via hauling line, & over a ground ladder to the upper floors of the training faciilty, use of the aerial ladder waterway as a standpipe, radio discipline, incident command, & much more.

As always, hose must be reloaded on the apparatus, and tools and equipment made ready for the next job.
