It’s been a busy few weeks across Dorchester County and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

From north to south, I’ve had the privilege of meeting with business owners, farmers, watermen, parents, community leaders, and citizens who care deeply about the future of our county. Everywhere I go, I hear the same thing: people want leadership that is present, accountable, and engaged.

One highlight was attending Evening in the Neck with my family and having the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people from across our community. I also recently visited Pinetop Learning Center, where we discussed ways the Sheriff’s Office can build stronger relationships with schools, staff, and students. Additionally, I enjoyed speaking with members of the Dorchester County Seafood Heritage Association about the future of our community and the industries that help define it.

What has inspired me most throughout this campaign is hearing your stories, concerns, and hopes for the future. I’ve listened, I’ve learned, and I’ve seen firsthand how much people care about Dorchester County.

As your Sheriff, I will lead from the front, remain visible in our communities, and work every day to build a Sheriff’s Office that earns your trust and reflects the values of the people it serves.

“It’s time for change.”

Tomorrow begins the month of June and with it comes the opportunity many of us have been waiting for.

Over the last several months, I’ve attended community events, visited local businesses, and spoken with citizens from every corner of our county. One phrase I’ve heard time and time again is:

“It’s time for change.”

The next Sheriff will determine the future direction of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office. On June 23, that choice belongs to you. Every vote matters, and every voice deserves to be heard.

I am grateful for the support my family and I have received, and I have worked hard to run a respectful campaign focused on the future of our county. I will continue to do so.

I’ve spoken with members of our community who have told me they have never voted in a primary election before, but this year they’re planning to vote because they believe their voice matters.

They’re right.

If you want positive change, the time is now. Every single vote matters.

Talk to your family. Call your friends. Encourage your neighbors to vote. Share our message and help us reach those who may not have made up their minds yet.

The momentum is building. The excitement is growing. And as so many of you have told me, “It’s time for change.”

Let’s finish strong. Let’s show up. Let’s vote. Together, we can bring positive change to Dorchester County.

My family and I appreciate every single one of you and I couldn’t ask for a more supportive community.

Early Voting: June 11–18
Election Day: June 23

Today was a true honor.

My sons and I had the privilege of joining members of our community as we placed American flags on the graves of our veterans ahead of Memorial Day.

From placing wreaths at Christmas to setting flags for Memorial Day, I am beyond proud of a community that continues to show up and honor those who served before us. Their sacrifices gave us the freedoms we enjoy today, and it’s our duty to never forget them.

Dorchester County has always been a community that takes care of its own and today was another reminder of that.🇺🇸

Apparently there are rumors circulating that I did not retire in 2022. So today, I’m proud to share the official City of Cambridge press release announcing my retirement from the Cambridge Police Department after over three decades of service. Serving this community alongside so many outstanding officers, firefighters, public servants, and citizens — has been one of the greatest honors of my life. While one chapter closes, my commitment to Dorchester County and the people who call it home has never been stronger. I’m here and I’m ready to proudly serve the citizens Dorchester County.

For Immediate Release

Veteran Cambridge Chief of Police Mark Lewis Announces Retirement Effective in September of 2022

Cambridge, MD (July 14, 2022). After thirty-five years of honorable law enforcement service and almost five years as Chief of Police for the Cambridge Police Department, Mark Lewis has announced he will retire effective September 6, 2022.

Chief Lewis stated, “It has truly been an honor and a privilege to have served as Cambridge’s 8th Police Chief. I will miss helping the community and being able to improve the quality of life for our citizens. But most of all I will miss the officers who will continue to serve this city for years to come.”

Chief Lewis began his distinguished career in law enforcement in 1988 and steadily rose through the ranks of the Cambridge Police Department. He retired as Acting Police Chief in 2017 before answering the call to return to service in March 2018 as Chief of Police again. Chief Lewis has led the CPD since as it has navigated economic challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic, crucial community conversations about policing and police accountability, and a recent spike in gun violence. His many accomplishments include advocating and obtaining pay increases for police officers, improving health insurance benefits, updating the CPD fleet, advancing community-oriented policing initiatives, adding technology such as the Shot Spotter program, and diversifying the CPD throughout all ranks.

His community involvement and public service extends well beyond his service to Cambridge. He served six years in the US Army Reserves and was a Dorchester County Corrections Officer for a year. Mark also served as a volunteer Firefighter with the Linkwood-Salem Vol. Fire Company for over 30 years. He is looking forward to beginning his next chapter spending quality time with his wife Carla, their two sons Tyler and Landon, and his daughter-in-law Kelsi Lewis.

Commission President Lajan Cephas offered the highest praise for Chief Lewis. “Chief Lewis is a proven leader, a trusted voice throughout the Cambridge community. He has led the CPD with honor, distinction, and grace. My fellow commissioners and I are extraordinarily grateful to Chief Lewis for his steady leadership, vision, and years of dedicated law enforcement service.”

Cambridge Police Captain Justin Todd will be the acting Chief of Police for at least the reminder of 2022 after Chief Lewis’s retirement date. Captain Todd has been with the City of Cambridge Police Department since 2001 and was born and raised in Dorchester County. City Manager Tom Carroll stated, “We are fortunate to have Captain Todd ready to step into this critical role in September. I am confident he can carry forward the advances begun by Chief Lewis.” Carroll added he is not considering any plans to start a recruitment process for the full-time chief of police in 2022. “Chief Lewis has set forth an ambitious, community-driven work plan for the CPD in the fiscal year that we have just begun. Captain Todd has my complete confidence to implement Mark’s vision in the coming months.”

Chief Lewis stated, “I will truly miss the work of helping the community and being able to help improve the quality of life for our citizens. But most of all I will miss the officers who will continue to serve this city for years to come. Thank you to everyone who has supported me during my entire career.

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

That quote in one of these photos really hit home for me this week.

At times this journey has felt like an uphill battle, but the unbelievable support I continue to receive from this community gives me motivation every single day. We are the underdogs in this race, and it’s going to take every Republican vote in the primary to get this done.

As I travel Dorchester County from north to south, I continue hearing the same thing: people are ready for positive change and leadership that is present, engaged, and willing to listen.

Wearing the uniform has always meant more to me than a title. It means serving with pride, leading by example, and building real relationships within the community. These photos are a small reflection of the commitment to service that has guided me throughout my career.

If I have your support, please continue spreading the word, and remember:
Early voting is June 11–18, or vote on Election Day, June 23.

If you’re still on the fence, I’d like to earn your support. Let’s have a conversation- reach out anytime.

Thank you, Dorchester County.

One community. One future. One Dorchester. 🩵

Tuesday evening, I was happy to attend the Dorchester County Council meeting in its entirety to listen to the residents of South Dorchester and better understand their concerns regarding the proposed Worlds End Turn closure. I believe it is important to not only show up, but to stay, listen, and hear every resident who takes the time to speak about issues affecting their community and quality of life.

As Sheriff, I will always believe in showing up, listening, and supporting the people of Dorchester County not just in one area, but throughout our county as a whole. Leadership means being present, hearing concerns firsthand, and working together with local and state partners to help find solutions that keep our citizens safe while supporting the needs of our communities.

I also believe it is extremely important for the Sheriff’s Office to have a strong working relationship with the Dorchester County Council. As Sheriff, I will work closely with our County Council members, maintain open communication, and ensure we are working together for the betterment and safety of all of Dorchester County.

Dorchester County deserves leadership that listens, stays engaged, and stands with the people it serves.

One community. One future. One Dorchester. 💙

Weekly Update

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a community meeting in Church Creek focused on organizing a local crime watch group. It was great to see neighbors coming together, taking an active role in looking out for one another and strengthening their community.

I also had the opportunity to speak about my vision for moving the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office forward. As the largest county in the state, we must ensure we have enough deputies on the road to properly cover our communities. Increasing patrol strength will expand coverage, improve response times, and better protect the citizens of Dorchester County.

Public safety starts with presence, communication, and trust. Meetings like this are a step in the right direction, and I’m grateful to everyone who took the time to be part of the conversation.

One community. One future. One Dorchester. 🩵
