The Battleship New Jersey is the longest, fastest, most decorated battleship in history. From 1943 to 1991, she served in WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, and the Persian Gulf. The mission of the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial is to restore, preserve, and exhibit the continuing history of the USS New Jersey and those who worked and served on her so their service will continue to educate and inspire future generations.

June, 1968. Boatswain's Mate Second Class Michael Carrico sounds the call to attention aboard Battleship New Jersey in the Pacific Ocean.

The boatswain's pipe is one of the oldest instruments in naval tradition, used for centuries to pass commands to crew across the noise of wind and sea. You can learn more about the traditions of life on board when you visit the ship.

New Jersey Helps Screen the Fast Carriers
From 11 to 13 June 1944, Fifth Fleet’s fast carriers struck Saipan, Tinian, Guam, and Rota as the Marianas campaign began to unfold.

USS New Jersey’s job was not only to bring heavy firepower to the fight. As Admiral Spruance’s flagship, she helped support the coordination of the fleet while also serving as part of the carrier screen protecting the Navy’s fast carrier force.

The carriers were the spearhead. New Jersey helped guard that spearhead.
Her presence meant command, control, and combat power could remain close to the action as American forces prepared for the invasion of Saipan.

Korea, 1951. Through the hatches of a 5-inch gun director, a fire control team scans the hills above Wonsan Harbor. Their job was to track targets and feed firing solutions to the 5"/38 secondary battery — versatile guns capable of engaging surface, shore, and airborne targets.

Come see the guns they were directing. The 5"/38 mount is part of our tour, and you can even climb inside the gun house when you come aboard.

1983. Battleship New Jersey fires a Tomahawk cruise missile off the coast of Southern California. The missile traveled approximately 500 miles to its target at the Tonopah Test Range in Nevada. During her 1980s commission she carried 32 Tomahawks in eight armored box launchers.

The missile deck is part of our tour route — you can come see exactly where the tomahawks were launched.
