Today, the members of Kershaw County Fire Service extend our deepest condolences to the City of Columbia Police Department, the officer’s family, friends, and fellow law enforcement officers following the tragic loss of one of their own.

This heartbreaking loss is felt far beyond the City of Columbia. Due to his connection to Kershaw County, this tragedy impacts our community as well. We join our public safety partners and citizens in mourning a life dedicated to serving and protecting others.

Please keep his loved ones, the Columbia Police Department, and all those affected in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

🔥 TRAINING OPPORTUNITY - THE ART OF READING SMOKE🔥

Kershaw County Fire Service is proud to host The Art of Reading Smoke with Battalion Chief Rob Backer on Monday, December 7, 2026, at Liberty Hall in Camden.

This highly acclaimed class teaches firefighters how to identify fire location, behavior, and progression by reading smoke conditions before visible flame is present. Through real fireground video analysis and practical lessons, attendees will gain valuable knowledge to make safer and more effective fireground decisions.

UPDATE 8/17/26 20:00 - KCFS units have been cleared from this incident and have returned to Kershaw County.

UPDATE 8/17/26 14:50 - KCFS units continue to work with state resources to extinguish this fire. Current units deployed are Engine 20 and Tanker 17.

🚒 Mutual Aid Response Underway 🚒

Kershaw County Fire Service is currently assisting Fairfield County Fire Service with a large commercial building fire at 1 MLILY Way in Winnsboro.

KCFS personnel and apparatus are operating alongside firefighters from multiple agencies as crews work to contain the fire and protect surrounding property.

Please keep all first responders in your thoughts as operations continue.

KCFS units are on scene at Main Street North and Hampton Street East in Bethune where downed power lines have blocked the roadway.

Please avoid the area, use alternate routes, and exercise caution while emergency crews and utility personnel work to make the scene safe.

🚧 TONIGHT: I-20 WESTBOUND TRAFFIC SHIFT BEGINS 🚧

Motorists traveling on I-20 Westbound over the Wateree River should be aware that SCDOT begins a traffic shift operation tonight in Kershaw County.

⚠️ A single lane closure will be in place between Mile Markers 97 and 95 as traffic is moved from the existing bridge to the newly constructed bridge. The operation is expected to continue through the morning of August 13.

🚗 Expect delays, slow down in the work zone, and consider alternate routes if possible.

🚧 TRAFFIC ALERT – I-20 WESTBOUND OVER THE WATEREE RIVER 🚧

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will begin a traffic shift operation on I-20 Westbound over the Wateree River in Kershaw County starting the night of Tuesday, August 11.

⚠️ What to Expect:
• Single lane closure between Mile Markers 97 and 95
• Traffic will be shifted from the existing westbound bridge to the newly constructed bridge
• Work is expected to be completed by the morning of Thursday, August 13
• Delays are possible throughout the operation

🚗 Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes when possible.

👷 Please slow down and stay alert when traveling through the work zone to help keep workers and fellow drivers safe.
