"Why do I need archaeological clearance for a Navajo Nation homesite lease?" This is one of the most common questions that Navajo Nation Heritage & Historic Preservation Department (NNHHPD) receives from the public.

Archaeological clearance for a homesite lease is required by Navajo Nation law. It ensures that homesite development does not disturb cultural, historical, or sacred areas.

The clearance also prevents "inadvertent discoveries," and unexpected encounters. NNHHPD receives multiple calls each year from residents who uncover bones, artifacts, or structural remains near their homesite. This is especially common when residents start building beyond their 1-acre homesite boundary. Situations like these can trigger legal consequences, cause stress for the family, create ceremonial imbalance, and permanently damage sites.

Overnight Traffic Alert: US 89 Closures Near Cameron (June 25–26)

Drivers traveling through the Cameron area should plan ahead for overnight travel impacts.

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises that US 89 at the State Route 64 junction will experience intermittent full closures for utility installation work by APS.

Thursday, June 25 (6:00 p.m.) through Friday, June 26 (6:00 a.m.)

What to Expect:
- US 89 will be closed in 15-minute intervals at milepost 465
- Access to nearby businesses will remain open
- Expect delays and allow extra travel time

Please drive safely and plan accordingly if traveling through this area overnight.
