Community Awareness!!! ATTENTION!!

COMMUNITY AWARENESS – “CAT IN THE HAT” SOCIAL MEDIA TREND

The Cameron Police Department and Cameron R-I School District have received calls and questions regarding the recent “Cat in the Hat” social media trend.

This is not isolated to Cameron or Missouri. Similar incidents have been reported in communities and school districts across the country, including:

• Colorado
• Minnesota
• Arkansas
• Kentucky
• Georgia
• Louisiana
• Kansas
• Tennessee
• West Virginia
• And other states

The trend generally involves social media accounts using images or videos of a disturbing version of the Cat in the Hat, sometimes generated using artificial intelligence. Posts may claim the character is “coming” to a particular community or school, and some have included the names of schools, students, or other threatening language.

At this time, we are not aware of any credible threat to the Cameron R-I School District, its students, staff, or the Cameron community associated with this trend. The Cameron Police Department and Cameron R-I School District are aware of the situation and will continue to review any information that is reported.

We also want students and parents to understand that calling something a “trend,” “prank,” or “joke” does not eliminate the consequences.

Arrests and criminal charges have already resulted from participation in this trend in other states. Students have been taken into custody or charged after allegedly creating or sharing posts targeting schools or communities.

We encourage parents to talk with their children about the seriousness of creating, sharing, or reposting threatening content. Even when there is no intention of carrying out a threat, these posts can create fear, disrupt schools, consume significant law enforcement resources, and potentially result in school discipline or criminal charges.

If you see one of these posts:
• Do not share or repost it.
• Take a screenshot or preserve the information.
• Report it to school officials or law enforcement.
• Do not attempt to contact or confront the person behind the account.
• Call 911 if the information indicates an immediate threat or danger.

The Cameron Police Department and Cameron R-I School District take all reports involving the safety of our students and schools seriously. We appreciate everyone who has brought these posts to our attention and encourage our community to report concerns rather than spread them.
