SPEAKING - AND REPORTING
I'm going to post here a copy of the letter I sent to the Cameron Observer about this week's School Board Meeting - just in case it doesn't make it to publication!
Dear Editor,
Public attendance at the February 17th Public School Board meeting included 6 of the 7 candidates for the 3 School Board seats to be filled in this year’s April 7th election, one candidate’s spouse, one presenter and several administrators (on the agenda). You weren’t there.
Doesn’t the Cameron Citizen-Observer consider a Public School Board meeting an important enough community event to have a representative present?
Here are some things I thought might be worth remarking on:
Superintendent Robinson’s “legislative update” on several bills under consideration in Jefferson City this year culminated with a call for all members of the school community to write to their State representatives.
Mr. Landi’s 5 minutes called the board’s attention to concerns about difficulties with Teacher retention our district has been experiencing in recent months and years.
Mrs. Hubbard (that’s me) also spoke 5 minutes - about encouraging wide civic engagement in what is going on in the Public Schools as a fundamental principle of American Civics. Starting with by rewriting a few School Board policies.
Nobody on the Board wondered about the 100% positive report on the new district “forum” called “Parent Square.”
There was some discussion of over-budget bids on the proposed High School addition before the meeting closed. And one accounting entry to “balance the books” needed board approval (?!)
The Citizen Observer’s responsible journalistic role in Cameron requires its presence and active reporting on matters addressed in our Public School Board meetings. I’m challenging you to do it!
Respectfully,
Margaret Ida Hubbard
