📢 ‼️ This is an Urgent Call to Action: Who you elect in November as your Town Supervisor and County Legislator has never mattered more.
Yesterday (5/5), the new Democrat majority of the County Legislature appointed four new representatives to the Onondaga County Industrial Development Authority, whose expertise is “eliminating housing discrimination and ensuring equal access to housing opportunities”.
While on the face of it, that sounds like a truly positive move, it masks a bigger agenda. One that affects every resident of our Town and Towns across the County.
These appointments are aimed squarely at fast-tracking the County Legislature’s goal to mandate low-income density housing in the suburbs and eliminate your Town government’s decision-making (Home Rule) when it comes to zoning.
In other words, they want to take away each municipality’s ability to make decisions about development in our own Towns. That means large scale low-income affordable apartment complexes - anywhere and in whatever number they see fit.
At the County Legislature’s meeting on Tuesday, the Chair plainly stated that it is their intention to work toward New York State take control of “affordable housing” zoning laws that will supersede towns’ Home Rule zoning.
No longer would each development proposal receive a thorough and thoughtful review by our Zoning, Planning and Town Boards with accompanying Public Hearings as is done today. Decisions would be made at the County and State levels without considering the impact on the quality of life in our Town, neighborhood input, and the potential strain on our schools, the Highway Department, overall infrastructure, our fire departments – which are already faced with recruitment challenges - and public safety.
This November, please cast your vote for me for Town Supervisor and Geneanne Keegan-Smith for County Legislator. Local governing in the Town of Onondaga is best done by local officials who know and love their Town and are dedicated to the residents who live there.
We CANNOT allow New York State to take control of our communities. I will fight against that tooth and nail for the residents of the Town of Onondaga.
Thank you. Please share with Town residents.
