It's a different world over here on the east side of the Oregon Cacades. First there is the river... beginning as a spring bubbling out of a mossy hillside. It flows under a tall canopy of old growth ponderosa pines, larch, fir, and cedar. Fly fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing are favored pastimes. Wizard Falls fun facts: Wizard Falls was a 12-foot tall cascade where the water bubbling out of Wizard Falls Spring poured into the Metolius River.

In 1948 when the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery was constructed, the spring was diverted to provide water for the rearing ponds, which rendered the falls dry.

A picture of the falls can be seen on an information board near the hatchery and it appears to have been a questionable waterfall in the first place. As it is now, unless the hatchery is shut down completely for cleaning or maintenance, chances are the falls will not flow again.

The small frothy rapid along the Metolius River adjacent to the bridge leading to the hatchery is often incorrectly assumed to be Wizard Falls.

An inspiring fly-fishing story, repost from :
“I picked up a fly rod for the first time 3 years ago — I never imagined it would take me on such a journey.

I’ve casted line in rivers with beautiful backdrops, that felt like I was in a movie.
Caught and released Trout with colors and patterns to unique to describe. Fly Fishing is my reset button that always brings me back to the present.
I spent last year refining my skills —
Exploring new waters with Ted and a backpack filled with the days essentials. Keeping a detailed journal, Practicing casting and Learning about hatches. Evenings were spent watching fly fishing videos, reading books and taking advantage of the Orvis online tutorials.
I will begin guiding later this year and cannot wait to share my passion and continue learning. But for now, I’ll keep casting line on as many rivers as I can.”
