💧 STORMWATER SPOTLIGHT: MCM 3 – ILLICIT DISCHARGE DETECTION & ELIMINATION 💧
The Town of Camp Verde Stormwater Division is continuing its series highlighting the six Minimum Control Measures (MCMs) required under the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit.
This week's focus is **MCM 3: Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination**, which is aimed at identifying and stopping pollutants from entering our storm drain system and local waterways.
Unlike wastewater, which is treated before being released, stormwater runoff typically flows directly into local washes, canals, and ultimately the Verde River without treatment. Because of this, keeping pollutants out of storm drains is critical to protecting water quality.
🚫 Common illicit discharges include:
• Sewage
• Oil, grease, and fuel
• Pet waste
• Soap, suds, and wash water
• Fertilizers and pesticides
• Paint and chemicals
• Litter, trash, and yard waste
Stormwater staff investigate reports from residents and Town employees, conduct inspections, and monitor drainage outfalls to identify and address potential pollution sources. These efforts help protect our waterways and ensure compliance with ADEQ permit requirements.
⚠️ Illicit connections are also prohibited. Examples include:
• Sewer lines connected to storm drains
• Washing machine or greywater discharges
• Floor drains connected to stormwater systems
• RV or vehicle waste dumped into storm drains
Residents play an important role in protecting Camp Verde's waterways. If you see a potential illicit discharge or suspect pollution entering a storm drain, please report it to the Town.

Remember: Storm drains carry untreated water directly to our waterways. Together, we can help keep the Verde River and our community clean and healthy.
