🌎 The Great ShakeOut Is Today!

At 10:19 a.m. California time, people across the state will practice what to do when an earthquake strikes. Will you join them?

Earthquakes can happen without warning, and you may not be near a desk or table when the shaking starts. A little preparation now can help you react quickly.

Keep these 5 safety tips in mind:

🔹 Drop: Get down on your hands and knees before the shaking knocks you down.

🔹 Cover: Get under a sturdy table or desk if one is nearby. If not, get low and protect your head and neck with your arms.

🔹 Hold On: If you're under a table or desk, hold on to it and be ready to move with it.

🔹 Stay put: If you're indoors, stay inside and away from windows, glass, and anything that could fall. Don't run outside during the shaking.

🔹 Practice ahead of time: Identify safe spots in your home, workplace, and other places you visit regularly. You may not have time to figure it out when an earthquake happens.

Take a few minutes today to practice. Knowing what to do can help you respond more quickly when it matters most.

Where do you charge your phone, e-bike, or power tools at night? This Fire Prevention Week, we’re joining the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and fire departments nationwide to “Charge into Fire Safety™”—starting with how we power our phones, laptops, e-bikes, and tools at home.

When lithium-ion batteries charge on a soft surface, heat can get trapped. If the battery overheats or overcharges, it can catch fire in seconds.

You can practice safe charging at home with two quick habits:

→ Charge on hard, flat surfaces only: Place phones, laptops, e-bikes, and tool batteries on a desk, counter, or bare floor while plugged in—never on sofas, beds, or under pillows.
→ Unplug once fully charged: Remove devices or charger packs from the wall as soon as they reach 100% to avoid overcharging and heat buildup.

Also, stick to the charger and cord that came with your device, or a manufacturer-approved replacement.

Where is the primary charging station set up in your home?

This is great advice and very timely. The upcoming El Nino season is predicted to be very severe. Make sure you're prepared with both insurance and standard preparedness.

As we wrap up National Preparedness Month, there’s one vital step many people forget until it's too late: checking their insurance coverage.

With state officials warning of potentially severe El Niño weather this winter, CA Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara is urging residents to review their policies now before storms arrive.

Did you know standard homeowners and renters insurance usually does not cover flood or mudslide damage?
Four key steps to take today:

* Don't wait to look into flood insurance: Flood insurance policies generally have a 30-day waiting period before coverage takes effect. Waiting until a storm hits is too late.

* Check your auto policy: Comprehensive auto insurance usually covers flood damage or trees falling on your car.

* Document your belongings: Take 5 minutes to walk through your home with your smartphone camera to record your furniture, electronics, and personal items.

* Renters, check your coverage: A landlord’s insurance policy only covers the building—not your personal belongings inside.
Protecting your household means being ready physically and financially.

Have questions about your coverage? Contact your insurance provider or call the California Department of Insurance hotline at 1-800-927-4357 or visit insurance.ca.gov.
