You’ve done the work to clear dry brush and build defensible space around your home – now register for the fall Community Chipping Program!

Registration for this free program opens September 8, and is brought to you by the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council with funding support from SCCFD.

What’s included:

* Free curbside chipping

* Drop-off depot locations in some areas

* Up to 100 cubic yards per household are allowed

Services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis, so mark your calendar!

On Friday, August 28, SCCFD firefighters teamed up with neighboring departments to help fight the Plaskett Fire in Monterey County. Together, they form a Type 3 Strike Team equipped with engines built specifically for rough terrain and wildland fires.

Firefighters have been working hard and so far, they have:

* Laid over 7,000 feet of fire hose — that’s more than 1.3 miles long!

* Protected homes and historic structures near the Pacific Valley Ranger Station.

* Secured fire control lines with planned firing operations.

* Cleaned up hot spots along Highway 1 to keep the roads safe.

Strike Team Leaders La Fuente and Pittman report that crews from SCCFD, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District , and Hayward Fire News are working together seamlessly. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication to keeping our communities safe.

Meet 12-year-old Cupertino resident Aniruddha "Ani"!

September is National Preparedness Month, and Ani is setting a great example for our community! While participating in the Cupertino Teen Advisory Council’s "Super Science Summer Search," Ani built a web app to help people prepare for, survive, and recover from wildfires.

Ani visited our Cupertino Fire Station to learn directly from firefighters as he developed his app and placed 2nd place in the competition! To celebrate, firefighters treated him to a tour of the station and apparatus, including Type 3 Engine 371, recently back from the Big Sur wildfires.

Follow Ani’s lead this National Preparedness Month with 3 simple steps:

* Set: Pack a Go-Bag and build an emergency plan.

* Go: Learn when and how to evacuate safely.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Los Altos Community Center for our final Wildfire Preparedness Workshop of the season last Thursday.

We had a very engaged audience who shared thoughtful questions on defensible space, California’s new Zone 0 regulations, and proactive fire safety.

A special thank you to the City of Los Altos - City Hall for hosting us in a wonderful facility and to all our wonderful partner organizations who tabled and shared critical resources with attendees.

The National Weather Service / San Francisco Office has issued a Red Flag Warning for the western portion of County Fire’s service area.
* AFFECTED AREA...Santa Cruz Mountains
* TIMING...From 5 AM to 3 PM PDT Friday, August 28
* THUNDERSTORMS...Lightning strikes with little precipitation and gusty and erratic outflow winds of 40 to 50 mph.
* IMPACTS...There will be an increased risk for power outages. Lightning strikes may result in new fire ignitions. Erratic outflow winds will result in rapid fire spread for both new and existing fires.
