A huge thank you going to Alex Pastrick at RC Fire Equipment for getting us hooked up with two new life vest! We have two members that are certified surface water rescue technicians! Through the generous donation from the Thurston Christian Church we were able to go out and purchase these in order to provide more services to the community!

Yesterday we joined in the community fun day celebrating the 250th anniversary of our freedom. Starting out with the parade and the ending the night on standby for the fireworks show! It was great to see everyone out and about!

Our deepest condolences to the family of Sheree Gauss. We are truly saddened to hear of her passing. Sheree was a past member of our fire department serving from 1994 to her retirement in 2017. During her time in the service she served as a CFR, responding to medical calls and providing rehab to our firefighters on fire scenes. Sheree you will be greatly missed by all who knew you! Thank you for your years of service to our community and may you rest in eternal peace!

As you celebrate America’s 250th birthday with family and friends, we hope you have a fun, memorable, and safe holiday!

🎆 Remember these important safety tips:
• Leave fireworks to the professionals whenever possible.
• Keep children and pets a safe distance from fireworks.
• Never use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol.
• Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby when using legal consumer fireworks.
• Never point fireworks at people, vehicles, or structures.
• Stay hydrated and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.
• Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle—not even for a minute.

If you’re traveling, buckle up, drive sober, and watch for emergency vehicles on the road.

Congrats to one of our very own 911 dispatcher!

☀️ SUNSHINE DISPATCHER RECOGNITION ☀️

Some people become the heart of a 9-1-1 center.
For Steuben County Emergency Services… that person is Janel Lewis.

Janel has been with the Steuben County 911 Center in Bath, New York since 2005. Starting as a dispatcher, later becoming a supervisor, and now serving as Operations Manager, she has dedicated over two decades to serving both her team and her community.

But her impact goes far beyond a title.

She picks up overtime so others are not constantly mandated.
She celebrates birthdays and anniversaries so people feel appreciated.
She helps make Telecommunicators Week special every year.
She trains new dispatchers, supports her team after difficult calls, and reminds people why their work matters.

Earlier this year, after the unexpected passing of the center’s Deputy Director, Janel stepped up once again — taking on responsibilities she never expected, while continuing to support everyone around her.

Her nominator shared:

“Janel is the most amazing person, coworker and friend. She truly is Steuben County 911.”

Janel represents exactly what the Sunshine Dispatcher Recognition Program was created for — recognizing the voices behind the headset who quietly hold everything together.

After years of advocacy by FASNY, the NYS Assembly has passed landmark legislation increasing the volunteer firefighter and EMS tax credit from $200 to $800, the first increase since the program was established nearly 20 years ago.

This legislation, S.6233-A (Sen. Martinez) / A.6790-A (MOA McMahon), also removes outdated restrictions that prevented volunteers from receiving both the state income tax credit and locally authorized property tax exemptions, delivering long-overdue support for volunteer emergency responders across New York state.

“This is a transformational moment for volunteer emergency services in New York State,” said FASNY First Vice President, Donald J. Farrell. “Quadrupling the volunteer firefighter and EMS tax credit from $200 to $800 sends a powerful message that New York recognizes the critical role volunteers play in protecting communities every day.”

As volunteer departments statewide continue to face recruitment and retention challenges, the legislation represents one of the most significant investments in volunteer emergency services in decades.

The Senate is expected to advance the measure in the coming days.
