Burning the midnight oil….and a little extra fuel.

We get asked a lot ā€œwhat’s the weight limit for a patient?ā€ The truth is, there isn’t a specific number of pounds. The helicopter operates more efficiently carrying a certain amount of weight, but lots of factors play into that. Our crews maintain a weight less than 230 lbs, which varies crew to crew. Every piece of equipment is weighed. Fuel is measured in pounds.

There will be times, such as this one, that you see our pilots drop the crew off and lift to ā€œburn fuelā€ while our med crew prepares the patient for transport. We make these adjustments all the time. This is just a way to do it so there’s no delay in providing access to our patients. The important thing is that the helicopter has enough fuel to transport you to a facility that can provide the resources needed, as quickly as possible, for the most optimal outcome. Sometimes there’s enough ā€œwiggle roomā€ to carry enough fuel to get us back to base, but we often stop to fill up at an airport on our way back.

As far as patient weights, there is not a specific ā€œcutoffā€ with a specific number of pounds. Opal, our helicopter at AE43, is a Bell 206. She has limited space in the patient compartment and a bar that extends over the patient’s abdomen. Our crews have a measuring device they use to measure abdominal girth (from hip to hip around the ā€˜tallest’ part of your belly) to ensure that you can comfortably be transported. If the girth will not comfortably fit, there are other options for safe transport. Sometimes that is ground transport by ambulance and sometimes we call in one of our neighbors to help us out!

Today, the Kentucky Air Medical Association joins countless others in mourning the loss of our friend, Dale Dobson.

Not all heroes wear capes. Some don’t wear flight suits or drive big trucks with flashing lights. Some wear work boots and spend a lifetime ensuring others return home safely.

Dale was one of those heroes.

A farmer by trade and a servant at heart, Dale dedicated his life to protecting Kentucky’s farming communities. His passion for farm safety was unmatched. For decades, he trained first responders, educated farmers of all ages, inspired the next generation of agricultural leaders, and created a nationally recognized farmer wellness program that has undoubtedly saved lives across the Commonwealth.

Dale loved people, and he loved Kentucky. His willingness to share his knowledge, encourage others, and advocate for the health and safety of those who work the land left an impact that cannot be measured.

Today, there is a hole in our hearts, but Dale’s legacy lives on through the thousands of lives he touched, the responders he educated, and the countless families who are safer because of his life’s work.

On behalf of the Kentucky Air Medical Association, we extend our deepest condolences to Dale’s family, friends, and everyone blessed to know him. Thank you, Dale, for your unwavering commitment to serving others and for making Kentucky a safer place for us all.

Your impact is immeasurable, your legacy enduring, and your memory will continue to inspire all of us.

Taylor Regional Hospital Recognized for Advancing Rural Stroke Care

American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Rural Recognition Silver Award honors efforts to address the unique healthcare needs of rural communities

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KENTUCKY, JULY 23, 2026 — People living in rural communities have an average life expectancy that is three years shorter than their urban counterparts. They also have a 40% higher likelihood of developing heart disease and face a 30% increased risk of stroke mortality, according to an American Heart Association presidential advisory on rural health.

Taylor Regional Hospital is committed to changing those outcomes. We are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for our communities.

On our journey to helping people live their best lives, optimize stroke care, strengthen collaboration, and reduce gaps in rural health outcomes, Taylor Regional Hospital has received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Rural Recognition Silver Award.

This achievement reflects Taylor Regional Hospital’s continued commitment to changing healthcare by ensuring patients throughout Central Kentucky have access to timely, evidence-based stroke care close to home.

The American Heart Association recognizes the essential healthcare services provided by rural hospitals, which play a vital role in initiating timely, evidence-based stroke care. All rural hospitals participating in Get With The Guidelines–Stroke are eligible to receive recognition based on a unique methodology focused on early acute stroke performance measures.

Stroke is the No. 4 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States, according to the American Heart Association’s 2026 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Report. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked by a clot or ruptures, preventing blood and oxygen from reaching brain tissue. When this happens, brain cells begin to die.

Early detection and rapid treatment are critical to improving survival, minimizing long-term disability and supporting a faster recovery.

ā€œWe are incredibly proud that Taylor Regional Hospital is being recognized for the important work our team does every day to improve stroke care for the people of Central Kentucky,ā€ said Mike Everett, CEO of Taylor Regional Hospital. ā€œWhen a stroke occurs, every second matters. This award reflects our commitment to recognizing symptoms quickly, providing timely, evidence-based treatment and giving every patient the best possible chance for survival and recovery.ā€

ā€œProviding high-quality stroke care in a rural community requires preparation, collaboration and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Rural hospitals can face challenges such as extended transportation times and limited resources, but we refuse to allow geography to determine the quality of care our patients receive. This is what changing healthcare looks like—strengthening systems, expanding access, working together and bringing exceptional care closer to home. This achievement belongs to every team member and community partner who plays a role in the stroke-care process. I am extremely proud of their dedication, teamwork and commitment to the patients and families we serve,ā€ Shared Mike Everett, TRH CEO.

Taylor Regional Hospital extends its sincere appreciation to the many professionals within TRH and collaborative partners whose coordinated efforts make timely stroke care possible. This includes the Campbellsville-Taylor County EMS, Campbellsville Fire & Rescue, and Air Evac.

Taylor Regional Hospital has also strengthened its stroke-care capabilities through partnerships with Viz.ai technology, UK HealthCare and the UK/Norton Healthcare Stroke Care Network. These resources support rapid communication, timely access to stroke specialists and coordinated clinical decision-making when every second matters.

From the first emergency response and communication to rapid assessment, diagnostic imaging, treatment and transfer coordination, each team plays an essential role in the stroke-care process. Their collaboration demonstrates that changing healthcare is a shared effort—one that depends on strong partnerships, clear communication and a commitment to doing what is best for every patient.

The Rural Recognition Silver Award honors hospitals for their commitment to excellence in acute stroke care, as demonstrated through performance on guideline-directed measures. These measures include intravenous thrombolytic therapy, timely interfacility transfer, dysphagia screening, documentation of symptom timelines and neurological deficits, emergency medical services communication, brain imaging and consultation with a stroke expert.

ā€œPatients and healthcare professionals in Central Kentucky face unique healthcare challenges and opportunities,ā€ said Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., MPH, chair of the American Heart Association Quality Oversight Committee and co-author of the Association’s advisory on rural health. ā€œTaylor Regional Hospital has advanced the important work of improving care for all Americans, regardless of where they live.ā€

Taylor Regional Hospital is proud to receive this recognition and remains committed to improving outcomes, strengthening rural healthcare and continuing to change healthcare for Central Kentucky and beyond.
