Northwest Water Planning Alliance

Northwest Water Planning Alliance The Northwest Water Planning Alliance (NWPA) is
working to ensure that dependable supplies of water are
available for generations to come.

The Alliance brings together five councils of government (COGs), representing approximately 80 municipalities, with five county governments in DeKalb, Kane, Kendall, Lake and McHenry Counties. The COGs include the Barrington Area Council of Governments, the Lake County Municipal League, McHenry County Council of Governments, Metro West Council of Government and the Northwest Municipal Conference.

The area encompasses 1.3 million people and includes municipalities ranging from small rural communities to cities as large as Aurora and Elgin. The NWPA serves communities and water suppliers that are served by groundwater and surface-waters excluding Lake Michigan. The NWPA focuses on water planning, water conservation and education and is advisory in nature.

Have you ever experienced the challenge of living without clean water? Join us this National Water Quality Month as we recognize the importance of our water sources for us and our ecosystem.

Nine things we can do at home to protect our water source are: wash your car at a car wash, pick up after your pet, don’t hose down your driveway, use a broom instead, don’t use fertilizer made with phosphorus, do not flush medication down the toilet or drain, properly dispose of leftover paint, take used oil or antifreeze to a recycling center, avoid using antibacterial soaps or cleaning products, and use a rain barrel to collect rainwater.

Let us all do our part to protect our most vital source!

Every year, we observe National Groundwater Awareness Week (NGWA) as a time of reflection, education, and activism. This week highlights the essential importance of one of the nation's fundamental resources.

Over 44% of the population depends on groundwater as a primary water source.

Moreover, NGWA encourages private water system owners to ensure their wells are operating safely and reliably by getting an annual inspection. Regular testing, maintenance, and treatment are encouraged to protect this invaluable resource. https://www2.illinois.gov/epa/topics/drinking-water/private-well-users/Pages/well-water-testing.aspx

Help plan for a sustainable water supply!

With support from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) has partnered with NWPA and the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) to develop a water supply sustainability plan. The plan will use sustainable yield values from the Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) to develop a water supply sustainability goal and recommend ways to establish a path toward long-term sustainable water use.

We can’t create a successful water supply sustainability plan without the involvement and expertise of municipal staff in the NWPA area. We invite you to join us at the NWPA Technical Advisory Committee meeting on Tuesday, February 28, where we will start the planning process.
