Driver Charged in Connection with Hit-and-Run of Watering Trough

In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 8, 2026, the historical watering trough at the intersection of Mad River Road and Rt 175 in Campton's Upper Village was damaged in a hit-and-run crash.

As a result of the investigation into the crash, the Campton Police Department located the vehicle involved and identified the driver as;

Christian Bayles, age 26, of Fairfield, CT.

On August 25, 2026, Bayles was arrested on a warrant and charged with negligent driving, conduct after an accident, and criminal mischief. Following the arrest, he was released on personal recognizance bail to appear for arraignment in the 2nd Circuit Plymouth Court.

Public assistance requested for crash

In the early morning hours of Saturday August 8, 2026, the historical watering trough at the intersection of Mad River Road and Rt 175 in Campton's Upper Village was damaged in a crash ​where the vehicle and driver left the scene.

The Campton Police Department is encouraging home and business owners ​to review surveillance footage, and is requesting anyone who has information concerning the crash, or knows of a recently damaged vehicle, to contact the police department at (603) 726-8874. Callers may remain anonymous if they choose.

From July 1 to July 31, 2026, the police department logged 873 calls for service and made 16 arrests. The following is a summary of arrests made by officers during this period.

A 48-year-old female was arrested for felony second-degree assault; domestic violence strangulation, domestic violence assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct, and theft on Route 175.

A 36-year-old male was arrested for felony OHRV conduct after an accident; death/injury, driving after suspension for DUI, taking an OHRV without owner’s consent, reckless operation of an OHRV, and criminal mischief on Owl Street.

A 38-year-old male was arrested for failure to comply with s*x offender registration

A 22-year-old male was arrested for two counts of failure to comply with s*x offender registration and obstructing government administration

A 37-year-old male was arrested on Ellsworth Hill Road for driving under the influence, driving after suspension, disobeying an officer, reckless operation, transporting an open container of alcohol, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, failure to use a turn signal, failure to stop at a stop sign, lane control, and breach of bail conditions

A 22-year-old male was arrested for domestic violence assault, harassment, and stalking on Route 3

A 51-year-old male was arrested on Jenny Lane on a bench warrant

A 37-year-old female was released on a summons to appear in court for driving after suspension on Owl Street.

A 40-year-old male was released on a summons to appear in court for unlawful activities; Litter control

A 35-year-old female was released on a summons to appear in court for operating without a valid license on Route 3

A 36-year-old male was arrested for breach of bail conditions

A 46-year-old male was arrested for bail jumping

A 25-year-old male was arrested for bail jumping

A 36-year-old female was arrested for breach of bail conditions

An individual was taken into protective custody for an involuntary emergency admission

Additionally, the police department made 208 motor vehicle stops, issuing 197 warnings and 11 citations, and responded to 5 motor vehicle crashes.
