Memorial Day, initially referred to as Decoration Day, was observed by many communities after the Civil War, when the nation suffered more than 620,000 military deaths, roughly 2 percent of the total population at the time.

John A. Logan, the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, chose May 30, 1868, as a day to decorate the graves of Union troops across the nation.

From this beginning, Memorial Day is now designated as an annual day of remembrance to honor all those who have died in service to the United States during peace and war.

Fatal Motorcycle Crash on US Route 3

On April 17, 2026, at 10:55 AM, the Campton Police Department, along with Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue, responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a motorcycle crash with injury on US Route 3 in the area of Town Pound Road. The rider of the motorcycle, identified as Elias Alexandro Ramos, age 18, of Douglas, Massachusetts, was located deceased at the scene.

Preliminary investigation reveals that Ramos was operating a 2024 Honda Navi north on US Route 3, and for reasons currently under investigation, went off the right side of the road, striking a guardrail, and was thrown from the motorcycle. Speed and/or alcohol are not believed to have contributed to the crash, and police believe a helmet was worn but improperly secured. US Route 3 was shut down for several hours as Campton Police investigated the crash.

The Campton Police Department was assisted on scene by Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue, New Hampshire Department of Transportation, and several good Samaritans who had stopped and provided first aid before the arrival of public safety responders.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Campton Police Department (603) 726-8874.
