If you were unable to attend last night, here is a link to watch a recording of “meet the candidates.” It’s a great way to learn more about the folks running for positions in our town.

Also-a big shout out to the members of our first responder departments for their support last night and today during this storm. I appreciate you!

Congratulations Officer Leva!

OFFICER JOSEPH J. LEVA NAMED 2023 OFFICER OF THE YEAR

There is no question that Officer Leva did an exceptional job in 2023. His professional maturity has grown exponentially, which is reflected in his work.

A summary of Officer Levas' statistics are as follows,

He responded to 2,351 calls for service. 250 incidents required an investigation. He made 54 criminal arrests and Officer Leva initiated 1462 motor vehicles stops, resulting in arrests for DUI, drugs, and other crimes and violations, keeping our roadways and community safer.

This is a small window into the caliber of officer that Officer Leva is. He is always willing to take that extra shift, cover for those who need time off, and he works many hours and extra details. Officer Leva supports his colleagues in any way he can and has earned their respect.

Officer Leva takes tremendous pride in his work, appearance, and how he represents our agency and the Town of Canaan. Just today, I was told by a citizen how hard they thought Officer Leva works, but others have given him high praise as well.

Officer Leva has shown true dedication to protecting and serving the citizens of Canaan. It would be impossible for me to name every single thing Officer Leva does to help our agency, but the most important thing I can do is to recognize him for it. These are the reasons why I have chosen Officer Joseph J. Leva as the 2023 Canaan Police Officer of the Year. Please join me in congratulating Officer Leva for his accomplishment.

Sincerely,

Ryan R. Porter
Chief of Police
