Howdy y’all. We wanted to share a cool group of critters that are visiting us at the Gene Howe WMA. A group of more than 10 Long-eared Owls has taken up in one of our eastern red cedars. These little guys are very interesting because they form communal roosts in the winter and are very good at blending into their surroundings. They are also amazing rodent hunters.

We will keep y’all informed if we have any other cool critters show up this winter.

Hey y’all. Big news here at the Gene Howe WMA! We just wrapped up our guided Mule Deer hunt and our hunter sealed the deal on a nice buck. William Nies harvested this beautiful 4.5-year-old 4x4 sandhill stud Saturday evening. The buck scored 151 6/8” gross and 146 0/8” net, meeting the minimum required score for Texas Big Game Awards! This was also a big milestone for the Gene Howe WMA as well. This was the first Mule Deer to ever be harvested on the Gene Howe to date! Congratulations William on your great harvest.

Reminder: all deer hunts are draw only. https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/hunt/public/public_hunt_drawing/

Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!

Howdy y’all! We just wrapped up our White-tailed deer gun hunt. We had a total of ten hunters participate and had a total of five bucks harvested. Of those five bucks, two met the minimum score requirement for Texas Big Game Awards. Congrats to all of our hunters that harvested during this hunt.

Reminder, all of our deer hunts are by drawing only. https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/hunt/public/public_hunt_drawing/.

Hey y’all. We just wrapped up our archery white-tailed deer hunt, and we wanted to share this cool harvest with y’all. Michael O’dell was able to make it happen on this beautiful 6.5-year-old 7-point buck out of our South Williams pasture. He measured 148 2/8” gross and 135 2/8” net. Congratulations on a solid buck.

Howdy y'all! We are getting closer to quail season, and the Gene Howe is looking pretty good this year. We recently wrapped up our roadside counts and averaged about 3.5 quail per mile. This is an improvement from last year, when we only averaged 0.98 quail per mile after the Smokehouse Creek wildfire. The range conditions look really good thanks to the timely and generous amounts of rainfall we have been receiving. We are predicting a good quail season.

Reminder #1, with regulation changes this year, the quail season opener will be November 1st.

Reminder #2, we ask that hunters on the WMA turn in one wing and the head of all harvested quail to our Check Station. These collection efforts will give the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and other conservation organizations more data regarding the parasites and diseases that affect quail all over Texas. We thank y’all for your continued cooperation and help.

Good luck, folks!

Hey ya’ll! Hope everyone is having a great summer. We wanted to show ya’ll some photos of the cool things happening at the Gene Howe.

Last week, the amazing folks from the Mesa View Senior Living Center took a trip out to the WMA to do some fishing. With the help of Mesa View and WMA staff, the residents had a great day catching tons of fish. These catches included some good sized Bluegill and Black Crappie that were released back into the sloughs to fight another day. We love when we can host folks coming out to the WMA to enjoy the outdoors.

Not long after the Smokehouse Creek wildfire, we discovered that we had Pileated Woodpeckers on the Gene Howe WMA! This is an incredible revelation for the Texas Panhandle due to them being primarily found in the southeastern and northern portions of the United States. And in the state of Texas, their range only extends into the easternmost portion of the state. So to find them on the Gene Howe WMA after a wildfire is very unique. We are very excited to find these magnificent birds in the Panhandle.

Howdy everyone. For those interested in learning more about the Gene Howe WMA and the recovery after the Smokehouse Creek wildfire here is the April issue of Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine. It tells a very interesting story about all the incredible events that followed the wildfire.

Additionally, we will be posting a few photos of the magnificent Pileated Woodpeckers that are now calling the Gene Howe WMA home.
