Over the past few days, two of our advisors have taken the next step in their fire service careers by being sworn in as full-time Firefighter/Paramedics! 🔥

👏 Congratulations to:
🚒 Austin Cordi — A proud graduate of the Northwest Fire Explorers program, Austin was sworn in as a full-time Firefighter/Paramedic with Lawrence Township!

🚒🔥 Fire Explorer Training!

Our Fire Explorers put their skills to the test during hands-on search and rescue training! They practiced searching in a smoke-filled environment, locating victims, and performing victim drags to remove them from hazardous situations.

Training like this builds teamwork, confidence, and the skills needed to operate in challenging conditions. We’re proud of our Explorers for putting in the work and continuing to learn what it takes to serve their community! 💪👏

🚨 Northwest Fire Explorers – Hazmat Training 🚨
Last night, our Explorers got hands-on experience learning about Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) response! 🧪👨‍🚒

The evening started with learning how to use the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG). Explorers worked through scenarios and learned how the ERG helps firefighters identify hazardous materials, understand potential hazards, and determine appropriate initial response actions.

From there, it was time to get hands-on! Our Explorers had the opportunity to put on Class A Hazmat suits and learn about the decontamination (Decon) process. This gave them a firsthand look at the importance of proper PPE, teamwork, communication, and following procedures when working around hazardous materials.

A BIG THANK YOU to FF Koonce for taking the time to lead this training and provide our Explorers with another great hands-on learning experience!

These are the types of opportunities that allow our Explorers to experience the fire service firsthand and see what it takes to become the next generation of firefighters and EMS providers.

This week, the Northwest Fire Explorers Post 1854 took time to reflect on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

Our Explorers were each tasked with researching a significant figure from that day and sharing what they learned with the group. We then discussed the historical significance of 9/11, the bravery and sacrifice displayed by first responders and civilians, and the lasting impact the events continue to have on the fire service.

The evening concluded with watching a 9/11 documentary, giving our Explorers an opportunity to better understand the events of that day and remember those who lost their lives.

Day 6 – Ohio Youth Fire and EMS Training Academy
Today marked the final day of training at the Ohio Youth Fire and EMS Training Academy. The Explorers put everything they learned throughout the week into action during realistic fireground evolutions using training smoke.
Working as engine and truck companies, they completed simulated:
🚒 Fire attack
🔍 Search and rescue
🪜 Vent-Enter-Isolate-Search (VEIS)
These scenarios challenged the Explorers to work as a team, communicate effectively, and apply the skills they developed over the past week in a realistic environment.
As the week comes to a close, I can honestly say how proud I am of each and every Explorer. Their dedication, willingness to learn, teamwork, and professionalism were evident every day. They pushed themselves outside their comfort zones, supported one another, and grew both personally and professionally.
Congratulations to all of the Explorers on a successful week at the Ohio Youth Fire and EMS Training Academy. The future of the fire and EMS service is in good hands! 🚒🔥

Day 5 at the Ohio Youth Fire and EMS Training Academy
Today was another action-packed day of hands-on training for our Explorers!
The day began with auto extrication, where they learned the techniques and safety considerations involved in removing patients from damaged vehicles. They also completed medical assessments, building the skills needed to evaluate and care for patients during emergency incidents.
The afternoon was dedicated to realistic, scenario-based training that brought together many of the skills they have learned throughout the week. Scenarios included:
🚒 Hose line advancement and fire attack
🪓 Forcible entry and search and rescue
🪜 Ladders and Vent-Enter-Isolate-Search (VEIS)
These challenging evolutions gave our Explorers the opportunity to apply their training while working as a team in realistic fireground situations.
After a full day of training, tonight the Explorers get a well-earned opportunity to relax and have some fun at the recreation center before getting ready for another day of learning.
We're proud of the hard work, teamwork, and dedication they continue to demonstrate each day at the Ohio Youth Fire and EMS Training Academy! 🚒🔥

Day 4 at the Ohio Youth Fire and EMS Training Academy
Another great day of hands-on training for our Explorers!
Today, they learned the fundamentals of wildland firefighting from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry, gaining valuable knowledge about wildfire behavior, suppression tactics, and safety. They also focused on scene size-up, learning how to assess emergency scenes and identify hazards before taking action.
The day wrapped up with one of the most challenging firefighter survival skills—ladder bailouts—where the Explorers practiced safely exiting a building through a window using a ground ladder.
Each day, these young men and women continue to build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for a future in the fire and EMS service. Great job, Explorers! 🚒🔥
