Canastota, New York is an Erie Canal community central to a region rich in historical tradition. Originally settled in 1810, Canastota evolved into a vibrant Canal town and became incorporated in 1835. A revitalized portion of the Canal still exists, running through the central portion of the Village. The Canal Town Museum is located just across the street from the Canal. Many Victorian style home

s from the active Canal period still exist throughout the Village. Products produced in Canastota, such as Canastota Cut Glass and Sherwood sleds and wagons, are highly valued in the antiques market. Canastota has a proud Italian heritage. Onions and potatoes from the local mucklands are recognized country wide. The Village has been prominent in the sport of boxing, producing two world champions. The International Boxing Hall of Fame is now a leading feature in the Village. Induction week is in June. This is an excellent week of fun for the family, boxing fan or not. The library is a Carnegie Library on the National Register of Historic Places. It is rich in architecture and full of excellent literary works. Canastota is located at exit 34 of the New York State Thruway. This allows easy access to Syracuse, Utica, Hamilton, Morrisville and the Turning Stone Casino.

As the 25th anniversary of September 11 approaches, the Madison County Historianโ€™s Office and Public Information Office are working to preserve firsthand local stories from that day and the days that followed.

Were you in a classroom or at work when you heard the news? Did you respond at Ground Zero, serve in the military following the attacks, or help others understand and process what had happened?

If you have a Madison County story, we want to hear it. You can submit a written account or video recording, along with personal photographs, journal entries, letters or emails that help tell your story. You may also choose whether your submission can be shared publicly or preserved only for historical documentation.

Share your story at https://www.madisoncounty.ny.gov/FormCenter/Historian-8/Remembering-September-11-Madison-County--280 or email [email protected].

Every story matters. Every memory helps preserve history.
