We have placed the memorial wreath and posted the flags at the Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial to honor Memorial Day.

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, stands as one of America’s most solemn and meaningful national observances—a day dedicated to honoring the men and women who gave their lives in service to the nation. Originating after the Civil War as Decoration Day, when citizens placed flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers, it evolved into a nationwide tribute encompassing all who died defending freedom.

The day reminds us that the liberties we enjoy were secured through sacrifice, and that remembrance is not a single act but a continuing duty. For communities across the country, Memorial Day is both a time of reflection and renewal. Ceremonies at cemeteries, parades through town squares, and quiet moments of prayer all serve to connect generations in gratitude.

It’s a day to teach youth the meaning of service, to comfort families who bear the cost of war, and to reaffirm our shared commitment to peace and unity. In honoring the fallen, we strengthen the living bond of loyalty and remembrance that defines the American spirit.

A big THANK YOU to the more than 35 community volunteers who participated in the VFW Day of Service to restore the Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial on Saturday. We also wish to thank Canby Landscape Supply for providing 5 yards of bark dust. Within the three hours of the project we polished the statute, cleaned the bricks, removed many dead stumps and bushes, and placed the 5 yards of bark dust. We are now ready for Memorial Day. Thank you!

HELP NEEDED. Help is needed to clean the Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial. We'll be at the memorial this Saturday, May 16th, 9am-noon. Our main tasks are spreading 2 units of bark dust, polishing the statute, and refreshing the memorial bricks. We can't do it all, so please come help us. Bring a small scrub brush if you can and gloves. This is a great event for students working off volunteer hours. Victory in Europe (VE) Day, observed on May 8,
commemorates the formal end of World War II in
Europe in 1945, when Allied forces accepted N**i
Germany’s unconditional surrender. For millions, it
marked the triumph of freedom over tyranny and
the beginning of peace after years of sacrifice and
hardship. Across the United States and allied
nations, spontaneous celebrations erupted as
citizens and servicemembers alike honored the
courage, unity, and perseverance that secured
victory.

For VFW Posts, VE Day stands as a solemn reminder
of the cost of liberty and a celebration of the
enduring spirit of those who fought to preserve it—
an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of the
Greatest Generation and to reaffirm our
commitment to peace and democracy

We’re honored to share that a commemorative brick has been placed at the Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial in remembrance of Captain Tai Duc Tu, who served in the ARVN from 1966–1975.
This meaningful tribute was placed by his family—Thao, Lan Pham, and Thanh—honoring his service, sacrifice, and legacy.
Please join us in remembering Captain Tai Duc Tu and all those who served during the Vietnam era. 🇺🇸

Loyalty Day, observed each year on May 1, is a national
reminder of the enduring principles that bind our country
together—freedom, unity, and unwavering commitment to
the ideals of democracy. First established in 1921 and later
recognized by Congress, the day encourages Americans to
reaffirm their dedication to the nation and to honor those
who have defended it.

For VFW Posts, Loyalty Day is an opportunity to highlight
the importance of patriotism, civic responsibility, and
community service, while recognizing veterans whose loyalty
has been proven through service at home and abroad. It’s a
moment to bring communities together, celebrate American
values, and inspire the next generation to carry them
forward.
