The weather is getting nicer and the summer will be here before we know it. With the warm weather means river use will increase. Several years ago we started a life jacket program at Community Park. If you have gently used life jackets that you no longer use please consider donating them to the city for use in Community Park.

What an exciting day in Canby! Today was the ribbon cutting and grand opening for the brand new The Canby Center (now To:gether Canby). This is such a treasure to have in Canby. The Canby Center has helped thousands of people and will now help thousands more.

Equipped with larger expandable space, more classrooms, larger food storage with refrigeration and freezer space. Please go by and take a look, and sign up to volunteer!

As mayor, I strongly support Measure 3-636 and encourage our community to vote yes on May 19. Canby has always been a community that values families, education, and investing in our future. This levy is an opportunity for us to support our local schools during a time of significant financial challenges and help prevent reductions that would directly impact students, teachers, and programs.

Measure 3-636 would help preserve teaching positions, maintain manageable class sizes, and protect educational opportunities that are important to students and families across our district. Just as importantly, this is a local investment — Canby dollars staying in Canby to support Canby kids.

I encourage residents to learn more about Measure 3-636 and join me in voting yes for Canby schools.

39 lashes with a whip, a helmet of thorns pressed into His head, then carry the 80-100 pound beam for the cross He will be hung on. Then have nails driven into your body- your right palm, your left palm, and then your crossed ankles. As He hung there, trying to breath, a spear is used to puncture His side and into His lung, to speed up His death. All this for mine and yours sin. To be the bridge between us, flawed, and our amazing perfect God.

Another exciting project completed! We are excited to have this pathway completed. Now there is access to 99E and Canby Marketplace without having to cross the RR tracks and go through the fence.

It is official, the Logging Road extension to 99E is now officially open!

This is great police and detective work. Thank you to all involved in the apprehension of this criminal.

This is great police and detective work. Thank you to all involved in the apprehension of this criminal.

On May 22, 2025, at about 1:17PM, Canby Police responded to a shooting in the Safeway parking lot. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle prior to law enforcement’s arrival. Five juvenile victims were identified as targets of the shooting. Luckily, none of the juveniles sustained injuries. Through interviews with the victims and witnesses, we learned the suspect discharged a firearm at least twice at the group of juveniles as they walked through the parking lot. While the gunfire missed the juveniles it did cause damage to an unoccupied parked vehicle. Canby Police located several pieces of evidence on scene, including video of the suspect vehicle. Victims/Witnesses also provided a description of the suspect.

Through further investigation by the Canby Police Department, Julio Espinoza was identified as the suspect. On Thursday, February 5, 2026 Canby Police Detectives arrested Julio Espinoza (35) of Silverton, after a warrant was issued following a grand jury indictment involving the discharge of a firearm in the parking lot of the Canby Safeway.

The warrant was issued on February 2, 2026, charging Mr. Espinoza with five counts of Unlawful use of a weapon (ORS 166.220), five counts of Menacing (ORS 163.190), and one count of Criminal mischief in the second degree (ORS 164.354).

Mr. Espinoza is currently lodged at the Clackamas County Jail.

Canby Police Department would like to thank the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, Silverton Police Department, Woodburn Police Department, and METCOM (Marion Area Multi Agency Emergency Telecommunications) for their assistance with this investigation/apprehension.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., the Canby Police Department responded to an Assist Fire call near the 300 block of S. Redwood Street following reports of an explosion. The scene remains active and will be closed to the public throughout the night.

Clackamas County has issued a Level 3 – Go Now evacuation for a 600-foot radius surrounding the explosion site. This evacuation order will remain in effect until 8:00 a.m. on February 4, 2026, while investigators and first responders continue to monitor and secure the area.

An emergency shelter has been established by the American Red Cross at Baker Prairie Middle School, located at 1859 SE Township Road, Canby, OR 97013, for residents affected by the evacuation.

For those needing transportation assistance to the shelter, Canby Area Transit is available at 503-266-4022. Transit services will operate from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. tonight, and will resume during regular business hours on February 4.
