💜 A Nation Mourns the Loss of Three Wildland Firefighters 💜
The wildland fire community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of three federal wildland firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on June 27, 2026, during a burnover while battling the Knowles and Gore Fires along the Colorado–Utah border.
The firefighters were part of an interagency response when rapidly changing fire behavior overran their position. Fire shelters were deployed, but despite their courage and training, three firefighters lost their lives. Two additional firefighters suffered burn injuries and remain in recovery.
The Knowles and Gore Fires have since merged with the Jones and Snyder Fires into what is now the Snyder Mesa Fire, which has grown to more than 28,000 acres under extreme fire conditions. As firefighters continue the battle, our thoughts remain with the families of the fallen, the injured firefighters, and every member of the fire service affected by this tragedy. (Wildfire Today)
As a retired wildland firefighter, today hits especially close to home. Every time we answer the call, we understand the risks—but that never makes the loss any easier. We honor these brave firefighters for their selfless service, unwavering dedication, and ultimate sacrifice.
