When most people think of the fire service, they picture turnout gear, fire trucks, hoses, and the Jaws of Life. What many may not realize is that firefighters carry a variety of specialized tools designed to solve problems and save lives in situations that don’t always involve fire.

One of those tools is a vehicle lockout kit. Coulee Croche Fire District 4 is equipped with lockout kits that allow trained personnel to gain entry into locked vehicles during emergencies. These tools can be critical when rescuing infants, toddlers, vulnerable adults, or anyone unable to unlock a vehicle during the extreme Louisiana heat we know all too well.

While not as recognizable as some of the equipment on our trucks, lockout kits have saved lives countless times and very recently, right here in another Acadiana area.

Earlier this year, several of our members attended a fire service event. Afterward, they stopped for lunch nearby. Because of the apparatus they were driving, they parked toward the back of the parking lot. When they returned to their vehicle, they observed a local fire department removing a child from a locked vehicle parked just a few spaces away.

We never learned the exact circumstances whether the vehicle locked itself, the keys were accidentally left inside, or something else occurred. What we did know was that a child was trapped in a vehicle, and help was needed immediately.

That moment served as a powerful reminder that emergencies can happen anywhere, including in our own district. Sometimes the most valuable lessons come not only from training classrooms and controlled exercises, but also from real world situations we encounter every day.

At Coulee Croche Fire District 4, we are always looking for opportunities to learn, improve, and better serve our community. Every tool on our trucks has a purpose, and every lesson learned helps us be better prepared when our neighbors need us most.

Coulee Croche Fire District 4 & Coulee Croche Firefighters Association were pleased to recently join our friends at Firehouse Subs in Carencro for a Touch-A-Truck event in celebration of the fire service and International Firefighters’ Day.

It was a privilege to spend time with our community, meet so many families, and share a closer look at our Tanker 411. Events like this are a reminder of what truly drives us—service, connection, and the trust our community places in us when emergencies arise.

Thank you to Firehouse Subs for hosting and to everyone who came out to support, learn, and celebrate alongside us! And last but not least, thanks to our 100% volunteer fire crew for showing up for our community, not only when it matters most, but for the good memories as well!

This afternoon, we were honored to receive a visit from Fr. Ken with St. John Berchman's, who took time to bless our new Engine 401 as we officially welcome it into service with Coulee Croche Fire District 4.

Moments like these are a reminder that our work is more than response and equipment — it’s service rooted in community, faith, and purpose.

We are grateful for the blessing, the support, and the opportunity to continue strengthening our ability to serve and protect our area.
