City Temporarily Closes Sewage Lagoons Trail Due to Aggressive Elk Activity

Cannon Beach, Ore. — The City has temporarily closed the Sewage Lagoons Trail following reports of aggressive elk behavior in the area. The closure is being implemented out of an abundance of caution to protect public safety.

The City is coordinating with the Oregon State Police (OSP) and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) and is following their guidance regarding the situation. Wildlife officials have advised that the trail remain closed while they monitor elk activity and assess conditions.

The trail will be closed for approximately one week, with a tentative reopening date of June 19, 2026. The reopening date may be adjusted based on recommendations from OSP and ODFW and the status of the elk activity.

Residents and visitors are asked to respect all closure signs and barriers and avoid entering the area during the closure period. Individuals encountering elk elsewhere should maintain a safe distance, avoid approaching the animals, and report any aggressive behavior to local authorities.

The City appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to ensure the safety of trail users and allow wildlife officials time to evaluate the situation.

For the safety of community members and visitors, the trail around the ponds has been closed through June 19, 2026. This determination was made based on Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's recommendation.

This trail is located around the water treatment ponds on 2nd Street. Barricades have been put up at the trail entrances.

🐾🚒 CLIFFSIDE DOG RESCUE IN ECOLA STATE PARK 🚒🐾

On June 6th, Cannon Beach Fire District crews responded to a rope rescue after a dog became stranded approximately 100 feet down a steep cliff in Ecola State Park.

The dog had been missing for nearly two hours after becoming spooked during a hike and running off. While assisting the owners, a Cannon Beach Fire District Deputy Chief was approached by two hikers who reported seeing a dog trapped on a cliffside. With assistance from the Cannon Beach Police Department's drone team, the dog was quickly located.

Given the challenging terrain, the Cannon Beach Fire District's High Angle Rope Rescue Team was activated. Rescuers hiked above the dog's location, established rope systems, and began a technical cliff rescue. As the first rescuer descended, the frightened dog moved farther across the cliff face, creating additional challenges. Despite the difficult conditions, the rescuer successfully maneuvered across the cliff, secured the dog, and both were safely hoisted back to the top.

The dog was reunited with its grateful owners and suffered only minor scratches.

We are incredibly proud of our personnel and the countless hours they dedicate to training for incidents like this. This successful rescue was the result of teamwork, preparation, and cooperation between multiple agencies.

A special thank you to the Cannon Beach Police Department for their drone support and Seaside Fire & Rescue for providing station coverage while our crews operated at the scene.
