Planning a controlled burn? 🔥

Before you burn, make sure you obtain the proper permit and confirm that burning is allowed for the day.

Fremont and Custer County residents can easily sign up for a burn permit online or by scanning the QR code on the flyer below. You can also call in your controlled burn using the toll-free number provided.

*Dispatch will no longer be taking calls to approve controlled burns*

Taking a few minutes to register your burn helps keep our community safe and ensures emergency services are aware of planned fire activity.

Please review the instructions carefully and always follow current burn restrictions and local fire district guidelines.

Stay safe and burn responsibly.

Cañon City Police Department Launches Blue Envelope Program to Support Safer, More Inclusive Community Interactions

Cañon City, CO — The Cañon City Police Department is proud to announce the launch of the Blue Envelope Program, a new community-safety initiative designed to support individuals who may experience communication challenges during interactions with law enforcement.

The program provides a simple, voluntary tool: a blue envelope that holds a driver’s license, registration, insurance, emergency contacts, and communication notes. When presented during a traffic stop or other encounter, the envelope signals to officers that the individual may need additional time, simplified communication, or reduced sensory input.

“This program reflects our commitment to meeting people where they are,” said Chief John Schick. “The Blue Envelope helps our officers recognize when someone may be experiencing anxiety, sensory overload, or communication barriers. It allows us to slow down, adjust our approach, and ensure the interaction is safe and respectful for everyone involved.”

The Blue Envelope Program is designed to support individuals with autism, dementia, intellectual or developmental disabilities, hearing impairments, traumatic brain injuries, or other conditions that may not be immediately visible. The program is not a registry, and the department does not track or store any personal information.

CCPD officers have been trained to recognize the envelope and respond with patience, clarity, and understanding. The department will also partner with local schools, disability advocacy groups, senior care providers, and community organizations to distribute envelopes and raise awareness.

“This is a small tool with a big impact,” Chief Schick added. “It strengthens trust, reduces misunderstandings, and supports both community members and officers in having safer, more positive interactions.”

Blue envelopes are available free of charge at the Cañon City Police Department lobby and will be distributed through community partners in the coming weeks.
