The Swimming Pool Feasibility Study has officially kicked off with the first public meeting, held February 28th at the Cañon City Middle School Auditorium. A little over 60 people attended to learn about potential options to replace the R.C. Icabone Swimming Pool. The study is designed to provide transparency for a pool project. It will tell us what the community wants in a facility, how much it will cost to construct and operate, where it will be located, and how it will be funded. There has never been a feasibility study performed in our community for just an aquatics facility.

At the meeting a website was launched to provide the community with information about the project. The website serves multiple purposes. It will have current information on the study steps, and on potential pool options. Over the next two months it will host multiple surveys to gather community input. Citizens will have the opportunity to ask questions and answers will be provided. This website will provide factual information about the feasibility study. The web address is https://engage.counsilmanhunsaker.com/ccrd-pool-study

The next public meeting with the consultants will be an online meeting only on Thursday March 7th at 5:30 pm on the City of Cañon City’s Zoom account and streamed on Facebook through both the City and the Recreation District. The meeting includes a question-and-answer session after the presentation. We encourage everyone to join us online. Here is the link for the Zoom meeting, https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85952161355 .

The District is seeking a feasibility report on the creation and operation of a new facility that will last for another 50+ years.

Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District staff are currently working hard and making every effort to open the R.C. Icabone Swimming Pool this summer. The original plan was to open on May 22nd for After School Swimming and officially open for the season on Saturday May 27th. The District is postponing the opening date due to a crack in the fiberglass liner.

The crack first appeared in 2022. Last year District crews patched the crack, but by the end of the season the patch had failed. We patched it again in late April of this year. The patch began to fail on May 17th. After consulting with multiple swimming pool engineers and experts we have come up with a plan to hopefully fix the issue. John Zimmerman of Zimmerman’s Auto Body met with District staff and we are going to make a last-ditch effort to patch the liner. If everything goes according to plan, we will be able to open the pool around June 1st or 2nd.

We want to be clear about the expectations for this repair. The repair must work in order for the Icabone Pool to operate this year. Two repairs have already failed due to the aging, degrading fiberglass liner. This is not unusual for these types of liners in the aquatics industry.

Barring any other mechanical issues, as long as this repair works the pool can open. If it does not work the pool will close.

This repair is our last hope at being able to operate. Please know District staff is doing everything possible to have the pool open and we thank John Zimmerman in advance for his help.
