Yesterday, June 1st, the North Strabane Township Police Department, along with several other police departments along the Route 19 corridor in the South Hills, conducted an educational and enforcement initiative focused on distracted driving. Officers stopped drivers who were observed using their cell phones—including while stopped at red lights—to educate them about the dangers of distracted driving.

As a result of this initiative, the North Strabane Township Police Department issued 93 WARNINGS and 6 CITATIONS for other traffic violations.

As a reminder, Pennsylvania's new § 3316.1, which prohibits the use of an interactive mobile device while driving, becomes enforceable by citation beginning Friday, June 5, 2026. We encourage all motorists to put their phones down and keep their attention on the road to help make our roadways safer for everyone.

Under PA’s new distracted driving law, known as Paul Miller’s law, drivers can be fined for using any mobile device while driving. That includes taking a quick scroll break at a red light or when stuck in
traffic!

On June 01, 2026, as part of the education of vehicle operators, Police Departments along the SR 19 corridor in the South Hills will be conducting an education and enforcement initiative, stopping any drivers observed using their cell phones, even at a red light, to warn about the dangers of distracted driving.

Over this month, officers from the North Strabane Township Police Department had the opportunity to train alongside the Allegheny County Police Department Bomb Squad. This valuable training provided hands-on experience, enhanced our knowledge of critical incident response, learned of upcoming threat trends, and strengthened our working relationship with our regional law enforcement partners.

Training is an ongoing commitment, and we continually prepare for a wide range of emergencies to ensure we are ready to respond when our community needs us most.

This week, one of our patrol sergeants was proactively patrolling the Racetrack Road corridor when he spotted country music artist Charles Wesley Godwin in the Sheetz parking lot. Mr. Godwin was gracious enough to stop, chat with Sergeant O’Leary, and take a photo with him.

We appreciate his kindness and willingness to take a few moments to connect with members of our community.
