Letter from the Deputy Chief’s desk

Good Evening,

Today, was an important day for the future of the Canterbury VFC. This morning, two of our junior members graduated from the Connecticut Fire Academy’s “Introduction to the Fire Service” class of 58. Connor Cooper and Gavin Goodale not only demonstrated professionalism and integrity, but also brought honor to Canterbury VFC and the Community of Canterbury. This program has given them the tools and knowledge to jumpstart their careers in the fire service. We at Canterbury VFC are very proud to have both Connor and Gavin in our ranks.

I’m very proud of you boys. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the community. I look forward to seeing you two grow in the fire service.

At approximately 6:59PM on Tuesday 07/14/2026, Canterbury VFC along with Connecticut State Police, and American Ambulance were dispatched to the area of 441 S Canterbury Rd for reports of a motorcycle crash. Units arrived on scene to find a motorcycle operator with a severe leg injury. Patient was transported to Backus Hospital in Norwich at the Advance Life Support (ALS) level. Fire personnel remained on scene to keep the roadway closed until the removal of the motorcycle.

As always, Canterbury VFC would like to thank the State Police and American Ambulance for their assistance.

🚨Traffic Advisory 🚨

Route 169 and Route 14 temporarily closure

Today is the Reason to Ride motorcycle parade. We anticipate the parade coming through Canterbury between 1PM and 1:30PM. While the parade comes through town, We along with State Police, Canterbury Constables, and our own Fire Police will have the intersection of Route 169 and Route 14 CLOSED to all traffic. We ask you to seek alternate routes. Please be safe and have a great Flag Day!

At approximately 17:23 on Friday, May 22nd, Canterbury VFC along with Connecticut State Police, Lisbon FD, and Central Village FD were dispatched to a two car motor vehicle collision in the intersection of Packer Road and Butts Bridge Road. Units arrived on scene to find two vehicles with occupants out of the vehicles with minor injuries. Lisbon ambulance obtained refusals from the occupants of one vehicle, while Canterbury Ambulance transported the occupant of the other vehicle to Backus Hospital. Engine 193 remained on scene to oversee vehicle removal and reopening of Butts Bridge Road.

On the morning of Friday, May 22nd, at approximately 07:34 Canterbury VFC along with Connecticut State Police were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover in the area of 380 North Society Rd. Units arrived on scene to find the vehicle off the roadway on its roof with the solo occupant already out of the vehicle with no reportable injuries. Crews remained on scene to oversee the removal of the vehicle and ensure the integrity of the roadway and environment remained intact. Roadway is now open at the time of posting.

We at CVFC would like to remind drivers to slow down and practice safe driving techniques while navigating back roads. We would like to thank Perry Motors for their swift response and effective removal to quickly reopen the roadway.

Today, Canterbury VFC attended Tristate Firefighter meet and fire truck show. We are pleased to announce that ET-193 took home “Photographers Choice”. We would like to thank John Daigneault, Thomas Marshall O’Neill and Hannah McGuire for their time on preparing our old gal to look her Sunday best.

On Friday, April 24th at approximately 12:00, Canterbury Vol Fire Co. along with Scotland VFD, and Central Village Fire Dept were dispatched to the area of 213 Brooklyn Road for reports of a working brush fire. Units were advised by dispatch that the fire was located 1/4 of a mile into thick woodland area and roughly 100’ by 100’ in area size. Due to the remote location of the fire, incident command requested additional UTV’s and manpower. Plainfield Fire Dept was added for their equipment and manpower. Once on scene, units worked quickly to keep the fire under control along side with the homeowners who assisted the crews with their own forestry equipment and tractors. Crews were quick to knock down the main portion of the fire and extinguished subsequent spot fires around the area.

We at CVFC would like to thank our members and mutual aid departments for their quick response and dedication to keeping our community safe. A big thank you to the homeowners for their support with their forestry equipment and by digging a fire line prior to our arrival.

We would also like to remind everyone that this spring season has been extremely dry and windy. It does not take much for a small fire to grow into something uncontrollable in these conditions.
