Love this article on New Hampshire war veteran John Wadleigh and his journey from the Battle of Bunker Hill to Canterbury Shaker Village, by our Director of Interpretation and Education Kyle Sandler.

Born in Hampsted, New Hampshire, Wadleigh would serve his state and future country at the pivotal and costly Battle of Bunker Hill, as a part of the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment. After the war, he joined the Shaker faith and community at both Enfield and Canterbury, with his name appearing in the original 1796 Canterbury Church Family Covenant.

Wadleigh led an interesting and full life, which we are able to know in part by piecing together information culled from the United States National Archives, Church Family Records, and other historic sources. It's a cool process to piece together the puzzle of the many many individuals who passed through Canterbury Shaker Village, an effort that helps paint a more detailed picture of this community and the history connected to it.

Great snapshot on Jacob Upham, one of the wonderful carpentry craftsman working on our East House (1810) preservation. It's just a wonderful example of the training to tradesman trajectory that museums/institutions like ourselves value and appreciate so much.

We literally could not keep these beautiful buildings and grounds preserved (going on over 230 years of structures here at the Village!) without their care, interest, and commitment to learning these old trades.

🌟 From Student to Preservation Professional! 🌟
We’re thrilled to see Jacob Upham featured in a recent North Bennet Street School newsletter. After graduating from the school’s Preservation Carpentry program in June, Jacob returned to New Hampshire and immediately got to work at Canterbury Shaker Village alongside fellow graduate Oliver Fifield of Historic Barn Restoration, LLC.

Jacob has been a familiar face at Preservation Alliance events, building connections with mentors, exploring career pathways, and inspiring the next generation of preservation tradespeople. Now, he’s already applying his skills to help preserve some of New Hampshire’s most significant historic places.

We recently shared Jacob’s story as he looked ahead to life after graduation—and we couldn’t be more excited to see him hit the ground running in his preservation career.

Bee House Grand Reopening : Saturday August 29th!

After updates and preservation measures, we are pleased to reopen the Bee House for public use, along with a brand new exhibition on Shaker agriculture at the Village. We welcome our guests to ReDiscover this new space and exhibition and to enjoy an afternoon that focuses on bees and agriculture with partners and community members in the area.

We'll have traditional oxen farming demonstrations, tours of the Shaker gardens, talks on native plants and pollinators, and observation bee house. Additionally, we'll have children stories and activities, local produce products and crafts for sale, and food/drinks/spirits to keep you moving!

It'll be a sweet day, look forward to seeing you out there!
