Barr Elementary from Plain Local Schools had a great visit to the fire station on Friday. These kindergarten students were able to tour the station, meet the firefighters who serve our community and learn about fire safety to keep their family safe. All of this while also having fun. Ask your kindergarten student what they have learned about fire safety this past week - it's never too early to plan for safety.

Here are some teachable moments from their visit:
- Although a firefighter looks different when fighting a fire, never hide from them. They are there to help you and rescue you in the event of a fire.
- Smoke detectors help save lives by alerting the family that there is a fire in the home. Be sure to test yours every month.
- Ambulances help those who are sick or injured. While it can be scary if you're hurt or sick, it's important to seek help by calling 911 to get the hospital and see the doctor.

Avondale Elementary with Plain Local Schools sent their kindergarten classes to Plain Township Fire and Veterans Park yesterday. While the weather was cooler, the kids had a great time learning fire safety with our dedicated team of firefighters. Here are some important safety tips that your children learned today. We hope they share this knowledge with everyone at home to promote fire safety at your house.

- Call 911 if you have an emergency.
- Children should learn their home address as early as possible so dispatchers know where to send help. For young children we recommend learning the street name first and teaching them that they can look for the house numbers on the house or mailbox. This breaks up the learning into smaller and easier to learn parts.
- Assign a safe meeting place at your house so in the event of a fire everyone knows where to meet outside. This helps firefighters account for everyone in the home and know when and who might be missing.
- Smoke detectors should be placed on every level of the home and tested monthly.
- Fire drills should be practiced at home so everyone knows how to get out safely. A great time to practice is when you test your smoke detectors.
- Never go back into a house where there might be a fire. Pets often hide from the smoke alarms when they go off but it is not safe for anyone to go back inside! This includes the parents - your children will follow your lead, if you go back in, they might to.

Welcome Warstler Elementary Kindergarten Classes! Plain Township Firefighters were honored to continue to welcome Plain Local Schools Kindergarten classes today to our station. We dodged the rain and the students had a wonderful visit to our fire station followed by lunch and play time at Veterans Park. To all of our parents, we hope your child is giving you a "test" on how to properly perform stop-drop-and-roll and crawling low under smoke to exit the home. Here are some important safety tips that your children learned today in one of our stations:

- Smoke rises in a fire so it is important that you stay low and go! Be sure to crawl under the smoke to get out of the house safely.
- Stop-drop-and-roll is an important technique to learn to put out fires on your clothing. But don't forget to protect your face when you roll! Make sure you practice this so you don't panic if your clothes ever catch fire.

Plain Township Fire has been invaded....by Kindergartners! Yesterday the Middlebranch Elementary Kindergarten classes had a field trip to our Central Station and Veterans Park on Schneider St NE. Students got to see our ambulances and fire trucks, spray water from a real fire hose, learn about what to do when a smoke detector sounds, see a firefighter in his gear, review when and how to perform stop-drop-and-roll, and learn to crawl under smoke to safely exit the home. Thank you to Plain Local Schools for being such a great partner in allowing us to teach fire safety the youth of Plain Township.

**NOTICE OF SEWER SMOKE TESTING**

The Stark County Metropolitan Sewer District is conducting smoke tests on the sewer lines in the areas South of Route 62 extending towards 30th St NE near Harmont Ave NE. The purpose of the testing is to evaluate sewer lines for leaks such as cracks or breaks in the lines. Smoke from this testing is normally vented out of your home through the vent pipe and Stark County employees will be walking around evaluating the smoke that is exiting the homes ventilation pipe in the roof.

Smoke that enters the homes, typically in the basement, could be from a dry trap or cracks in the service line. Running water in the drains in your home will prevent or remedy smoke in the home from a dry trap.

While the smoke is non-toxic and leaves no lasting residue, those with respiratory problems should consider leaving the home if smoke appears in the home. If you have questions about this testing, please reach out to the Stark County Metropolitan Sewer District at (330) 451-2320.
