🚨 Rapid Response to Swatting Incident 🚨

Yesterday, the Canton Police Department received a report of an extremely serious emergency. The caller reported that they had just murdered their family and were still armed with a firearm. The caller refused to exit the residence and then disconnected the call with dispatch.

Our on-duty officer immediately responded to the location. In less than 1 minute and 55 seconds from the time the officer was dispatched, the officer had arrived, entered the residence, and prepared to confront the reported armed subject.

Fortunately, officers quickly determined that the reported murders and armed threat were false and that the incident was a swatting call—a deliberately false emergency report intended to provoke a significant law enforcement response.

While the call ultimately proved to be false, our officers had no way of knowing that when the call came in. The information provided required an immediate and serious response, and our officers responded accordingly.

We want to highlight the speed, professionalism, and preparedness demonstrated by our officers during this incident. In a situation where every second matters, our officer went from being dispatched to entering the residence in under two minutes.

Swatting is not a harmless prank. These calls unnecessarily place innocent people and law enforcement officers in potentially life-threatening situations and divert valuable emergency resources.

We are proud of the quick and professional response demonstrated by our officers and grateful for the cooperation and assistance of everyone involved.

In the early morning hours of Monday July 20th, Canton PD Officers were dispatched to the area of 8th/Lincoln for a domestic assault. The victim had escaped to a Family member’s house and was able to make contact with Police to report the situation. Officers arrived on scene and tried to make contact with the suspect but were unable to as the suspect would not come to the door. Due to a history of violence and possible weapons involved, Officers made a perimeter and tried to make contact via phone multiple times but were unsuccessful. Canton PD Officers maintained a perimeter with the help of the Lincoln County SO, while also completing an arrest warrant for the suspect. After the warrant was approved by a Lincoln County Judge, the Highway Patrol SWAT team arrived on scene to help serve the warrant.

The suspect was apprehended without incident. The suspect was lodged for the following charges:

Aggravated Assault Domestic
Kidnapping
Simple Assault Domestic

(All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law)

The Canton PD would like to thank the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department and the Highway Patrol for their vital roles in this situation.

This was an isolated incident and all suspects have been accounted for. The Canton Police Department will take all the steps necessary to keep the community safe.
