Water leaks can waste over 10,000 gallons a year in an average home - enough to fill a backyard pool! Because we rely on surface water, every drop matters, especially during a drought.

Kids from the Cherokee Recreation and Parks Fish Camp visited the Hollis Q. Lathem Reservoir on Tuesday to fish and to learn about impacts to water quality . After lunch we did the Project WET activity Sum of the Parts, which tasked the kids to decide what they were going to do with a piece of riverfront property and one million dollars. Some built water parks, others a golf course, dirt track and multiple built docks into the river for fishing/boating. The lesson is everything we do impacts downstream. Thank you to everyone that played! The answer was B - Outdoor Watering. Just like you get thirsty when you are hot, plants are thirstier during hot and dry months. Waterwise tips to help are: 1) use mulch or pine straw to cover the soil to help it hold moisture 2) do not water in the hottest part of the day - outdoor watering is permitted before 10 am and after 4 pm. 3) choose native plants that need less water.

It is a great time to test your WaterSense, since we are currently in a drought.

Be the first to answer the question correctly and win a $10 Amazon GC and a frog or ladybug moisture meter.

Where does the average home use the most water during the hotter months?
A. Dishwasher
B. Outdoor Watering
C. Shower/Bath
D. Washing Machine
