CANTON VOTERS: YOUR PERMANENT ABSENTEE BALLOT STATUS HAS NOT CHANGED

We know recent news about a U.S. Supreme Court decision involving federal election directives may raise questions particularly for Canton voters who have signed up to automatically receive an absentee ballot.

Here’s what Canton voters need to know: Nothing has changed for you today.

If you are an eligible Canton voter on Michigan’s Permanent Absentee Ballot List, you remain on the list and should continue to expect an absentee ballot to be mailed to you for upcoming elections. You do not need to reapply or take any additional action because of this court decision.

The Supreme Court’s August 24 decision did not determine that the President’s executive order is lawful or change Michigan’s voting laws. The case remains ongoing.

The Canton Clerk’s Office will continue administering elections under Michigan and federal law using the same established procedures and safeguards our voters expect.

As this litigation continues, we will closely monitor any developments and communicate directly with Canton voters if anything changes that affects how you register or cast your ballot.

Canton Clerk’s Office Statement on Unofficial Primary Election Results

CANTON, MI — August 11, 2026

During the County Board of Canvassers’ review of the August 4 Primary Election, it was determined that the unofficial election-night results did not include 823 absentee ballots that were properly cast and tabulated.

The Clerk’s Office has identified the cause of the discrepancy.

On election night, the rollers on two high-speed absentee ballot scanners were not functioning optimally. To continue processing ballots, election workers transferred additional batches to a second high-speed scanner. Because that system could not accept two batches with identical batch names, those ballots were tabulated but were not included in the final unofficial election-night results report.

The affected ballot totals were:

Precinct 6: 13
Precinct 7: 31
Precinct 8: 106
Precinct 9: 49
Precinct 10: 42
Precinct 16: 205
Precinct 17: 51
Precinct 18: 103
Precinct 19: 117
Precinct 20: 106

Total: 823 absentee ballots

These ballots were not lost or uncounted. The issue was limited to the reporting of unofficial election-night results, not the ballots themselves. The unofficial results report discrepancy was identified during the canvass process, and all affected ballots are being included in the official results prior to certification next week.

Michigan’s independent county canvass is designed to reconcile election records and identify discrepancies before certification. Election-night results are preliminary and unofficial.

The Clerk’s Office has determined that the scanner performance issue, combined with the temporary processing workaround, led to an unintended error in the generation of the unofficial results report. Procedural and equipment updates are being prepared for the November General Election, including revised tabulation methods intended to prevent recurrence.

The canvass process confirmed the unofficial election results report discrepancy, identified its cause, and ensured that all properly cast ballots will be reflected in the final certified results.

📊 2026 State Primary Election Update – Thank You, Canton!

Thank you to everyone who participated in today’s State Primary Election. Your engagement has already made this a historic election for our community.

So far:
🗳️ 28,652 voters cast a ballot in Canton Township, representing 39.32% of our 72,864 active registered voters—the highest turnout for a primary election in Canton history.

Here’s how voters chose to cast their ballot:
📬 17,404 absentee voters (60.74%)
🗳️ 2,361 Early Voters (8.24%)
🏫 8,887 Election Day voters (31.02%)

Today was also one of the busiest days of the election cycle for absentee ballots. Our team received and verified 2,645 absentee ballots, meaning 15% of all absentee ballots were returned on Election Day alone.

Our election workers are now in the final stages of tabulating absentee ballots. We are almost finished, and unofficial election results will be posted as soon as tabulation is complete.

Thank you to our dedicated election inspectors, challengers, volunteers, and Clerk’s Office staff who have worked tirelessly over the past several weeks to administer a secure, accurate, and transparent election.

📬 Absentee Ballot Update – August 3

Today, the Canton Clerk’s Office:

✅ Received and verified 1,827 absentee ballots for tabulation.
📨 Issued 69 absentee ballots over the counter.

Current totals:

25,326 absentee ballots issued
14,767 absentee ballots received and verified
58.31% of issued absentee ballots have now been returned.
113 voters chose to spoil their absentee ballot and vote during Early Voting instead.

Reminder: If you still have your absentee ballot, it must be received by 8:00 p.m. tomorrow, Election Day (Tuesday, August 4) to be counted.

You may return your voted absentee ballot:
📍 To the Canton Clerk’s Office, or
📬 To any official Canton Township absentee ballot drop box.

Ballots must be received by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, a postmark is not sufficient.

🎉 Early Voting Complete — Thank You, Canton!

What an incredible nine days of Early Voting!

Today marked the final day of Early Voting, and Canton voters turned out in record numbers.

🗳️ 578 voters cast their ballot in person today, a 301% increase over the final day of Early Voting during the 2024 August Primary.

Over the course of Early Voting:
✅ 2,361 voters cast their ballot in person.
📈 That’s 3.4 times the total number of Early Voters during the entire 2024 August Primary, when 689 voters voted over the same nine-day period.

The steady increase in participation throughout Early Voting demonstrates how much voters value having more flexibility and convenience when casting their ballot.

While Early Voting has now concluded, there’s still one more opportunity to vote.

🗓️ Election Day is Tuesday, August 4.
Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. If you’re in line by 8:00 p.m., you have the right to vote.

What a finish to another incredible day of Early Voting!

Today, 422 Canton voters cast their ballot in person, the largest single day of Early Voting we’ve seen this election cycle and a 273% increase over Day 8 of the 2024 August Primary.

🎉 In just 8 days, 1,783 voters have voted early in person, more than 2½ times the total number of Early Voters during the entire 2024 August Primary, when 689 voters cast ballots over 9 days.

🚨 Absentee ballot tabulation is officially underway! 🚨

At 8:00 a.m. this morning, our bipartisan absent voter counting boards began processing more than 12,000 absentee ballots already returned by Canton voters.

Throughout the day, election inspectors will carefully verify, open, and prepare ballots for tabulation following Michigan election law. Every step is conducted with multiple election inspectors, strict chain-of-custody procedures, and transparency to ensure every valid ballot is counted accurately and securely.
