2026 LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS

The Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Connecticut will take place from Wednesday, June 3 through Friday, June 5, 2026. This inspiring event aims to raise awareness for Special Olympics, support its year-round sports and health programs, and promote inclusion for individuals of all abilities throughout our communities.

More than 1,500 active and retired law enforcement officers are expected to participate, representing over 90 municipal departments, 18 Department of Correction facilities, the Connecticut State Police, and college campus public safety agencies across the state.

On Thursday, June 4, 2026, Canton Police Department officers, joined by friends, family members, and Special Olympics athletes, will participate in Leg 5 of the run. Our team will begin at approximately 1:30 PM from the Farmington River Tubing pick-up area (located across from Bristol’s Farm) and continue east along Albany Turnpike, concluding at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Simsbury.

Motorists should anticipate delays along Albany Turnpike during this time and are encouraged to use caution while traveling through the area.

We hope you’ll join us in supporting this meaningful cause and cheering on our runners!

With the onset of prom season, graduation parties, end-of-school celebrations and the free-time and fun of the summer season, some parents can be tempted to host parties for their minor-aged kids and their friends—sometimes with alcohol—with the mistaken belief that it is a safer option for their kids to drink at home than to drink somewhere else.

Let’s be clear: that choice is neither safe nor legal.

Connecticut General Statutes Section 30-89a states in relevant part that it is a Class A misdemeanor for any person having possession of, or exercising dominion and control over, any dwelling unit or private property to (1) knowingly, recklessly, or with criminal negligence, permit any minor (person under the age of 21) to possess alcoholic liquor in such dwelling unit or on such private property, or (2) fail to make reasonable efforts to halt such possession.

What that means:
🚫 Providing alcohol to minors = illegal
🚫 Allowing underage drinking in your home = illegal
🚫 Ignoring it = still illegal

Even if “they’re not driving,” you can still be held criminally and civilly liable if something goes wrong.

✅ What You SHOULD Do

Before the Party:
• Set clear expectations with your teen
• Communicate rules about alcohol, drugs, and curfew
• Keep gatherings small and controlled (no open invites)
• Limit party areas within your home
• Plan structured, safe activities

During the Party:
• Be present and attentive
• Provide food and non-alcoholic drinks
• Monitor guests—no coming and going
• Watch for signs of alcohol or drug use
• Don’t hesitate to end the party if needed
• Call parents if issues arise

🚓 And most importantly:
Never let anyone drive impaired. Take the keys. Arrange a safe ride.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which that date falls as National Police Week (May 10–16, 2026).

National Police Week is a time to honor the brave men and women of law enforcement who serve their communities with compassion, professionalism, and unwavering dedication. It is also a solemn opportunity to remember and pay tribute to the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty while protecting others.

Thank you to all law enforcement officers for your service, sacrifice, and commitment to keeping our communities safe.
