After a summer working patrol, SRO’s Johns and Mersier are back in the schools. By the looks of it, they must have had a rough summer.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Corporal Kevin Keegan’s passing. He passed away unexpectedly on Monday evening at the hospital due to a sudden medical event. Kevin dedicated over 19 years of service to the Sheriff’s Office within the Jail, and his commitment, professionalism, and presence will be deeply missed. Please keep Kevin’s family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts during this difficult time.

~2026 Guardian Award~

We had a special visitor in Canton on Monday! U.S. Senator Mike Rounds met with Sheriff Swenson and members of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at the Sioux River Sportsmen’s Club.

During the visit, we had the opportunity to showcase equipment that the Sheriff’s Office has been awarded through various Homeland Security Grants over the past several years. This equipment has played a vital role in helping keep our deputies and community members safe during highly dangerous situations.

Our equipment has also been deployed to assist law enforcement agencies throughout surrounding jurisdictions, allowing us to work together and support one another when public safety is at risk.
In recognition of Senator Rounds’ continued support of law enforcement and his efforts to ensure agencies have the resources and equipment necessary to meet the needs of their communities, Sheriff Swenson presented Senator Rounds with the Guardian Award.

We sincerely appreciate Senator Rounds’ continued support of the men and women who serve and protect South Dakota communities. Thank you for being a strong advocate for law enforcement and public safety!

~Back to School Traffic Safety~

With school starting next week, please make sure you take time this weekend to help your young drivers prepare for their commute!

Each year during the first week of school, we respond to multiple crashes on SD Highway 115 (Minnesota Avenue) at Tiger Way. The most common cause is drivers following too closely and failing to anticipate that traffic often backs up into the through lane as vehicles wait to turn into Harrisburg High School.

Please remind your student drivers to:
-Leave plenty of following distance.
-Expect stopped traffic, especially during arrival and dismissal times.
-Stay alert and avoid distractions behind the wheel.

🚧 Construction Update:
Willow Street is currently closed between Tiger Way and Creekside Place. While the Tiger Way entrance from Willow Street is expected to reopen before the first day of school on August 18, construction throughout Harrisburg may impact normal travel routes.

Take a few minutes before school starts to drive or discuss your student's route with them. Planning ahead can reduce stress, improve traffic flow, and most importantly, help everyone arrive safely.

Let's work together to make this a safe start to the school year for all Harrisburg students, families, and staff.
