Good afternoon Cherokee County,

September is National Preparedness Month, and GEMA/HS is encouraging Georgians to use the month as an opportunity to make preparedness a priority at home, at work and in their communities.

This year’s National Preparedness Month’s theme is “Americans Stand Ready” and will focus on several distinct ideas that capture how Americans take pride in their ability to protect themselves and their families and work together to recover from disasters.

Each week during National Preparedness Month will focus on an important step that Cherokee County residents can take to become better prepared:

Week 1: (Sept. 1–5) – Make a Plan: Get your household, including your pets, ready for emergencies. Know what to do, where to go, and what you will need to protect yourselves during a disaster.

Good Afternoon Cherokee County,

(8/17/2026) 4:30 pm update, Cherokee Co. EMA is monitoring the potential for strong/severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. A Slight Risk (level 2 out of 5) of severe thunderstorms has been adjusted southward to include Cherokee County. An organizing line of thunderstorms in middle and eastern Tennessee is forecast to spread southeast through this evening, with the main impacts being damaging winds and large hail.

Cherokee EMA is continuing to monitor a line of severe thunderstorms as they push south this evening. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings (red polygons) and Tornado Warnings (pink polygons) have been common with this line tonight. If the line holds together, damaging winds and large hail are the main threats for Cherokee County. A severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 1:00 AM.
