Over the last year, Haywood County has been building out its network of Emergency Alert Sirens, which will sound when flood waters threaten lives along Haywood’s waterways.
Installation work on the system is nearing completion, and configuration is underway.
We are pleased to share that the siren vendor will begin audible testing of the system this week. Testing may continue into the following week, depending on how quickly progress is made on the work.
Residents who live and work near siren locations can expect to hear test tones as crews work to verify each siren individually and as part of the network. These are tests only and not actual alerts. Actual alerts will include or be followed by mobile phone messages such as Wireless Emergency Alerts or Haywood Alerts.
The tones used this week may not represent the final tones that will be used for alerts, since the system is still being tested.
When testing is complete, and final tones and configurations are set, Haywood County will host a series of events and publish educational materials that will explain what the sirens will sound like, how they will be triggered, when they may be triggered and what actions to take when a siren is activated.
More information about those events will be shared at a future date.
