Over the last year, Haywood County has been building out its network of Emergency Alert Sirens, which will sound when flood waters threaten lives along Haywood’s waterways.

Installation work on the system is nearing completion, and configuration is underway.
We are pleased to share that the siren vendor will begin audible testing of the system this week. Testing may continue into the following week, depending on how quickly progress is made on the work.

Residents who live and work near siren locations can expect to hear test tones as crews work to verify each siren individually and as part of the network. These are tests only and not actual alerts. Actual alerts will include or be followed by mobile phone messages such as Wireless Emergency Alerts or Haywood Alerts.

The tones used this week may not represent the final tones that will be used for alerts, since the system is still being tested.

When testing is complete, and final tones and configurations are set, Haywood County will host a series of events and publish educational materials that will explain what the sirens will sound like, how they will be triggered, when they may be triggered and what actions to take when a siren is activated.

More information about those events will be shared at a future date.

Additional information about Haywood County’s Emergency Alerting options, and links to sign up for Haywood Alerts can be found at https://readyhaywood.com/emergency-alerts/

PSA:
This a photo of one of the river gauge monitors that have been installed on the bridges at Chinquapin Rd. and Burnette Cove Rd. These gauges are a vital part of the new warning system for our community, they are powered by solar panels. However sometime in the last few weeks both solar panels have been stolen. This not only causes problems with getting the system up and running, but once the system goes live this could have significant impacts on warning our community in case of high water. I know people are out and about at all hours of the day and night, if you see someone especially at night messing with one of these gauges or a siren pole, please call the Sheriff’s Office immediately.

Note:
There will be people working on the gauges and poles in the next few weeks that are legitimate (daylight hours).

The United States Forest Service is currently conducting a 1,200-acre prescribed burn in Pisgah National Forest. Because of the size and location of this operation, smoke is very visible from several areas in and around Brevard and throughout Transylvania County. Please do not be alarmed.

Happy Veterans Day

We are especially grateful to several of our members who are vets and are still serving their community.
