Today the Sheriff's Office has received numerous reports about a "Captain Wells" calling citizens in McPherson County and telling them they missed jury duty.
THIS IS NOT proper notification of missed jury duty, and we do not employ a "Captain Wells".
If you are ever called and accused of a crime and are unsure of the validity, hang up and call directly to your local jurisdiction.
MOST IMPORTANTLY ... absolutely DO NOT give out any personal information or bank/financial account information over the phone to unfamiliar persons.

Emergency Train Stop Near McPherson County Fairgrounds Prompts Multi-Agency Response

McPherson County, KS — On July 18, 2025, at approximately 11:00 p.m., a Union Pacific Railroad train was forced to make an emergency stop near the McPherson County Fairgrounds, just outside of Canton, following a report of an individual lying on the tracks.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Canton Fire Department, Canton EMS, McPherson Fire Department, McPherson County Sheriff's Office, and Union Pacific Railroad personnel. A coordinated and thorough search of the area was conducted by all responding units.

After an extensive search, no evidence was found indicating that anyone had been struck by the train. Rail operations resumed following clearance of the scene.

The City Code Enforcement will be giving out notices after this weekend for unkept properties. This will include tall grass and weeds. So if your grass and/or weeds are 10 inches or higher expect a notice.
