UPDATE: Water has been restored; there is no boil water advisory in place.

SPECIAL NOTICE: Water Main Break

Please be advised that the City of Canton is currently responding to a water main break on Scott Mill Road.

Effective immediately, both lanes of a portion of Scott Mill Road are closed. Additionally, traffic on Edwards Street has been reduced to a single lane.

Expected times of completed repairs:

Scott Mill Rd. - Water expected to be available between 8-10 PM
Edwards St. - Water expected to be available between 10 PM-12 AM

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Progress on the Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services Downtown Canton Station #16 continues with exterior and interior renovations!

Outside, the scaffolding is coming down as the brick tuckpointing, the process of repairing damaged or crumbling mortar joints in a brick wall, is complete! The roof is getting its new slate-look tile shingles and its TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) roofing membrane, which is used on flat and low-slope commercial buildings.

Moving inside, the framed walls are taking shape and the mechanicals, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical, are going in on the second floor. The installation of the gear locker room structural steel is happening soon.

Expected completion date is spring 2027. We will continue to provide more updates in the coming months.

Council recently approved the proposed expansion of Downtown Canton's Entertainment District to extend west to include The Mill on Etowah, east to align with Jarvis St., and north in anticipation of the incoming North Street Development. *Map image below has been updated.

What is an Entertainment District?

It's an area defined by the Downtown to encourage pedestrian friendly access, aka walkability, between venues that feature entertainment, which include live music, dining, breweries, galleries, and festivals. It also allows for a patron to leave a business within the designated area and walk through the district with an open container of alcohol, as long as it was purchased from a licensed vendor located inside the entertainment district.

What is an Entertainment District not?

It is NOT: a plan for redevelopment, infrastructure expansion, a replacement for event permits, land-use zoning change, or permission to drink irresponsibly.

Why would Canton expand its Entertainment District?

"An Entertainment District means more time spent Downtown supporting local businesses and giving people a reason to linger," said Aundi Lesley, Economic Development Manager. "Ultimately it boosts local business through foot traffic and event-driven spending, and we're excited to expand the district to encompass everything our Downtown offers!"

On August 20, 2026, the Canton City Council approved the FY 2027 Budget, which includes $852,111 in reductions from the original proposal. Earlier in the month, the Council also voted to keep the City’s millage rate at 5.250 mills, ensuring that property taxes do not increase for residents, even as Cherokee County raised its fire millage rate from 2.888 to 3.023 mills.

The County’s increase added about $728,000 to the City’s cost for fire services compared to the prior year. The Proposed Budget anticipated an increase of about $625,000, leaving a gap of about $103,000. Staff reviewed the budget closely and identified responsible ways to reduce spending without reducing programs or services residents rely on. Savings came from modifying contractual spending and tightening everyday operating costs like small equipment, supplies, and employee training and related travel.

These adjustments help the City operate more efficiently, stretch taxpayer dollars further, and prepare for future needs, all while keeping essential services running smoothly.
