The fences are up and work has begun on the renovation of the Cherokee Fire & Emergency Services Station 16 in Downtown Canton!

The interior is currently a clean slate down to the original brick, and new features to be added back will include a large kitchen and dining area, living and seating areas, meeting spaces and offices, individual sleeping quarters for 6 full-time Fire and EMS staff, a locker room, restrooms and showers, and a gym. A "History Hall" in the front portion of the building will be open to the public, along with restrooms.

The truck bay will also undergo renovations to upgrade the facilities and provide more accessibility for the equipment.

The project is paid for by Fire Impact Fees, and is expected to be completed in Spring 2027.

Sculpture Installation Coming to Heritage Park Gateway!

The City's first sculpture installation by the Canton Cultural Arts Commission is coming to the western gateway of Heritage Park. "Currents of Canton" by artist Huelani Mei celebrates the Etowah Darter, a fish species that can only be found in the Etowah River. Mei was the selected artist by the CCAC in a call for sculpture artists held late last year.

"Embedded in the Etowah River system, "Currents of Canton" transforms the locally endangered Etowah darter into an iconic sculpture of movement and connection," said Mei. "By celebrating a species found nowhere else on earth, this sculpture becomes a defining placement at Heritage Park reflecting Canton’s history, environment and community."

The sculpture is completely funded by a private donation, and is expected to be installed in August 2026.
