Monarchs are on the move.
Welcome to Texas!
Feel free to do a flyby, the pattern is open.

The first male radio-tagged monarch has reached Texas!

Monarch JMU004 was originally tagged in Virginia on Sep. 23, 2025, and he's now traveled more than 3,000 miles. He was also the first radio-tagged monarch to be detected within the boundaries of a known overwintering site.

JMU004 was near Austin by the end of the day on March 19. In addition to being the first male radio-tagged monarch to reach Texas, he's the second monarch that had been radio-tagged in the fall to reach Texas (XSTI009 was first, with a detection on March 14).

We'll be back with more spring migration updates next week! In the meantime, we encourage you to follow along in the monarchs' journeys this weekend by downloading the free Project Monarch Science mobile app.

History Highlight: Canyon Lake

Completed in 1964, Canyon Dam was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after decades of flooding along the Guadalupe River.

Today, the Corps manages the dam and GBRA manages the water supply operations associated with Canyon Lake โ€” working together to support flood protection, reliable water supplies, and responsible water stewardship through both rainy and drought periods.

Hope to see you at the pollinator fiesta!!

FYI

For your planning pleasure~
From the Corps:
On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the Corps of Engineers will perform an annual inspection of the dam, outlet works, conduit and flood control gates. The inspection of the conduit and flood gates will require temporarily cutting off water releases sometime between the hours of 8 AM and 4 PM. We understand that this short period of no water releases may create some inconveniences for downstream users but it is necessary to ensure a thorough and safe inspection of the conduit and flood gates.
Thanks for your patience!
