As we are preparing to begin our new fiscal year on July 1, 2026, we'd like to share some of the major investments the Cape Charles Volunteer Fire Company is planning to ensure we continue providing the highest level of emergency service to our community.
Our first priority is replacing our Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)—the air packs our firefighters rely on when entering smoke-filled and hazardous environments. Our current SCBAs are now 19 years old. Industry standards recommend replacement after 15 years, and they must be replaced or removed from service after 20 years. The estimated cost to replace our fleet is approximately $180,000. To help fund this important investment, we have applied for a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and are hopeful to receive notification by September 2026.
Our second major priority is planning for the replacement of our Rescue Engine and second-due pumper. This apparatus has proudly served Cape Charles for many years and is more than 30 years old, but after decades of responding to emergencies, it has reached the end of its practical service life and has been removed from service. The frame rails have deteriorated from corrosion, and the engine, transmission, and fire pump all require major rebuilds due to age and years of service. Replacing this truck is the most responsible long-term investment for both firefighter safety and reliable emergency response.
Depending on whether we purchase a used engine not older than 10 years or a new engine, the replacement cost is expected to range from approximately $300,000 to more than $850,000.
We are optimistic about the possibility of receiving the FEMA AFG grant. If awarded, it will allow us to replace our aging SCBAs while preserving resources to move forward with replacing our Rescue Engine. If we are not selected, our FY27 working capital will need to be focused on purchasing the new SCBAs, and we will continue exploring financing options and other funding opportunities for the apparatus replacement.
We are often asked why projects such as updating the front of the fire station or making cosmetic improvements are not higher on our list. While we would certainly enjoy enhancing our facility, our mission is first and foremost to protect the people of Cape Charles and surrounding Northampton County. Investing in reliable apparatus and modern, safe equipment ensures our firefighters can respond safely and effectively whenever our community needs us.

As we begin FY27, we remain committed to being responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to us while continuing to invest in the equipment and apparatus needed to keep Cape Charles safe for years to come.
