Established in 1962,the Cape Coral Fire and Rescue Department proudly serves over 165,000 citizens and protects nearly 120 square miles. Since the beginning, the Cape Coral Fire Department has grown to 10 stations and has plans for atleast 10 more. There are currently 175 firefighters, including 55 Florida State Certified Paramedics, that are dedicated to protecting the lives and properties of our

community. Cape Coral is a coastal community that includes 400 miles of canals, the most of any city in the world. Cape Coral is also the largest city between Tampa and Miami and is the 4th largest city by area in the state of Florida.

Please join us next Friday, September 11 for a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony beginning at 8:30am. The ceremony will take place in the parking lot in front of City Hall, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd., and will include a brief presentation followed by attendees staking 2,977 American flags, each with a name of a victim of the attacks, in the City Hall front lawn honoring their memory and reaffirming that "We Will Never Forget."

*Please be aware that the parking lot in front of City Hall will be closed to cars to accommodate the ceremony from 5pm on Thursday, September 10 to 1pm on Friday, September 11. Parking is available at the back of the building or across Cultural Park Blvd. City Hall will be open regular business hours.

Yesterday evening around 7:30 p.m., Elijah Ivanez was walking his dog around Penley Lake Circle when he heard a smoke alarm and smelled smoke coming from a nearby apartment. Elijah returned home and alerted his mom to call 911.

When Engine 8 arrived, firefighters identified the apartment and saw smoke coming from around the door. When no one answered, they forced entry and found heavy smoke inside. Firefighters immediately began a search and found a cat inside the apartment, bringing it safely outside. The stove with items stored on top was the source of the fire, which was quickly extinguished.

In recognition of his quick actions and concern for his neighbors, firefighters presented Elijah with a Community Recognition Coin. His decision to speak up and alert his mom helped ensure firefighters could respond quickly resulting in a saved life and minimized property damage.

Thank you, Elijah, for looking out for your community!

A reminder for everyone: Never use your stovetop as a place to store items, even when the stove is turned off. Items can come into contact with a burner that is still hot or that is accidentally turned on.

Please welcome Fire Engineer/Driver Zair Gonzalez to this edition of WHO ARE WEdnesday! For his actions on scene of a structure fire, Engineer Gonzalez received the 2025 Cape Coral Firefighter of the Year award. As the front door was fortified which delayed entry, Engineer Gonzalez entered through the front window with fire blowing from the opening. Drawing on the search techniques he practices over and over, he located a medically handicapped victim in the living room, moved them to the front door where he was able to open the door from the interior and remove the victim from the structure, giving them the best possible chance of survival under extreme conditions. He then immediately rejoined his crew and led the interior attack to extinguish the fire.

Engineer Gonzalez is also part of the CCFD Urban Search and Rescue team and a member of USAR Task Force 6 and has deployed to numerous disasters around the State, including the collapse of Surfside condominium in 2021.

Additionally, he is one of our bilingual firefighters speaking, both English and Spanish, which helps strengthen communication and trust with residents, ensuring language barriers do not prevent community members from receiving critical emergency information, assistance and care.

Training Tuesday: Heart Attacks

The Cape Coral Fire Department medical in-service this month covered current best practices for post myocardial infarction, or heart attack, care. Dr. Lee, the CCFDโ€™s Medical Director, who presented the information, also ran practice scenarios with our firefighter EMTs/Paramedics.

Congratulations to siblings Blake and Valentina Aura who were recently recognized alongside their family by Fire Chief Mike Russell with an Award of Exemplary Action.

Blake and Valentina independently witnessed a single-vehicle crash on Cape Coral Parkway when a vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree, and caught fire. Without hesitation, they rushed to help and pulled both occupants from the burning vehicle to safety. Both patients were transported to the hospital as trauma alerts, but the quick actions and courage demonstrated by Blake and Valentina likely saved their lives.

Just after 9:30pm this evening, Ladder 5, Rescue 5, and Battalion 33 responded to a car fire on Diplomat Pkwy. The car caught fire after striking a generator that was in the roadway. There were three occupants in the vehicle who, fortunately, were all able to get out safely.

The Cape Coral Fire Departmentโ€™s mission is to save lives, protect property, and serve our community through risk reduction and emergency response. While prevention is always the goal, your Cape Coral firefighters are prepared to respond when an emergency occurs, including searching for and rescuing victims during a structure fire.

Contrary to some misinformation posted in a comment on social media, victim search is a critical component of our fireground operations. The Cape Coral Fire Departmentโ€™s Operating Guidelines for Fireground Search and Rescue establish standards for conducting search and rescue operations, with an emphasis on maximizing victim survivability while maintaining firefighter safety. The CCFD operates under the assumption that someone is inside the structure and that our immediate actions will reduce the chances of serious injury or death. Our firefighters also follow the Operations Letter of Intent, which is provided in full below.

Preparing for these emergencies requires more than just knowing the procedures. Our firefighters train through classroom instruction, scenario-based evaluation, and hands-on practice to ensure they are ready to respond when our community needs them most.

Prevention is the goal. Preparation is the responsibility. When lives are at risk, we are ready to respond.

At last nightโ€™s meeting, City Council approved the Fire Service Assessment (FSA) funding for the CCFD for FY27. This assessment provides a dedicated funding source for fire protection services, including the vital people, equipment, facilities and resources needed to respond when you need us. For more information on how the FSA is calculated, the Tier 1 and Tier 2 system, and the ready to serve model, please view the explanation by the Finance Director and the City Manager in the below video.
