Cape May County Commissioners will consider a resolution to partner with the Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation to study tidal energy at Townsendโ€™s Inlet Bridge and Middle Thorofare Bridge.

The goal of the study is to measure whether the strong tidal flow through these inlets could provide emergency backup electricity for critical services when storms knock out the grid.

Commissioner Patrick Rosenello: โ€œThis an exciting project to consider. But before we talk about how weโ€™re going to harness this energy, we need measured data to assess the viability of the project. This is a practical way to find out whether tidal flow might help keep emergency services running when a storm takes the grid down.โ€

At its Sept. 22 Board of County Commissioners meeting, Cape May County took an initial step to address parking needs and support the tourism economy in the Wildwoods.

The Board of County Commissioners introduced a $4.2 million bond ordinance to acquire a vacant beach-block property on Cedar Ave. in Wildwood and created an advisory committee with the City of Wildwood, GWTIDA, County Counsel and SJTA to plan a revenue-producing public parking garage.

The Wildwoods welcome as many as 14 million visits a year. About 60% of tourism-district parking still sits on private surface lots that are disappearing as land values rise. Private parking is down about 20% from its peak. Four parking lots are for sale; one is already under contract for housing.

โ€œParking is infrastructure that keeps our tourism economy moving,โ€ said Commissioner Director Leonard C. Desiderio. โ€œToday we secured land at risk of being lost and put the right partners at the table so this asset can be planned carefully and operated to serve visitors, businesses and taxpayers.โ€

Next Steps: Due diligence, a shared-services operating model with GWTIDA and a financing plan designed ensure parking revenue covers acquisition, operations and debt service over time.
