EXIT ZERO “RAMBLINGS FROM THE EDITOR”
ENDORSES CHUCK LEAR FOR MAYOR OF CAPE MAY

In an excerpt from the November 3, 2016 (Vol 14, No. 39) issue of Exit Zero, editor Jack Wright expressed the following sentiments in reference to current mayor Ed Mahaney and mayoral challenger Chuck Lear:

“And all this time, this mayor has been preaching about how he’s the man who has the interests of the taxpayers at heart. Like many of the things Mahaney says, I don’t believe that’s true. And that is why Exit Zero is calling for the eight-year reign of Mahoney to end this Tuesday, November 8.

In his place the voters have the opportunity to elect Chuck Lear, a very capable, very experienced, very affable former lieutenant in Cape May Police Department. Lear is, I believe, a man who can heal many wounds that have been opened in Cape May during the Mahaney reign.”

Near the conclusion of the article, Wright reiterates his position regarding Lear by saying: “I think that Chuck Lear brings the promise of a new start for this beautiful place, and I hope you will agree.”

I thank Jack Wright for his perspective on this important mayoral race and his explicit endorsement of my candidacy. I pledge my commitment to ending the rancor that has marked public discourse in our City and I invite our citizens to support me and “the promise of a new start” for Cape May.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 4, 2016

As you know, I am a candidate for Mayor of the City of Cape May on Tuesday, November 8th. I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the enthusiastic level of support I have received during this very interesting campaign.

Specifically, I believe a very important component of Cape May remaining successful and competitive is to apply strict fiscal discipline in our City budgets and to control property taxes so that seniors and families don’t get priced out of living in our beautiful community.

We can do this by always having an eye on ways to reduce spending. I want us to actively pursue all possible ways to consolidate and share services with our neighboring communities.
I want the City to very carefully review its non-essential activities to make sure we are not spending money on strictly elective programs, such as entertainment promotion at Convention Hall, which might be done in a much more cost effective way with a private sector partner or vendor.

I promise to make controlling spending and protecting our quality of life here in Cape May my highest priorities in office, when the citizens of Cape May entrust me with the honor of continuing to serve the City, this time as Mayor.

I will expect, and will fully utilize, the services of all of the professionals who work for the City, such as our city manager, treasurer, Bond Counsel, our independent auditor and others to ensure that every dollar of tax monies spent by the City is spent wisely and only after we have worked very hard to make certain that there aren’t more cost effective solutions in fulfilling our responsibilities.

Financial discipline is Key to maintaining our quality of life here in Cape May.

My campaign for Mayor has been focused on the future of our City. I have been fortunate enough to live here my whole life, to have raised a family here with my wife Karen and to have worked in Cape May City government for 37 years.

Former Cape May Mayors Endorse Chuck Lear

Three former Cape May Mayors who served the City most recently announced their united and unilateral endorsement of mayoral candidate Clarence “Chuck” Lear. Lear is challenging incumbent, Ed Mahaney, for the post.

Former Mayors Jerry Inderwies, Sr., Robert Elwell and Jerry Gaffney were unanimous in their support of Lear, a long-time public servant who is a political newcomer. They previously have expressed their individual and collective dismay at the divisiveness that seems to mark Cape May’s public discourse.

The 3 mayors agreed that Lear’s 37-year career in the Cape May Police Department would serve him well in terms of understanding the community, its history and traditions, its needs and resources, and its vision for the future.

Lear noted his deep humility at the endorsement of the respected former mayors. He expressed appreciation for their confidence in him saying, “I am eager to serve Cape May in the most effective way possible so I welcome their knowledge and guidance.”

Lear retired as a Lieutenant in the Cape May Police Department in December and, at the urging of local residents, decided to run for Mayor to restore the integrity of the Council-Manager form of government in which the City Manager is the chief executive officer.

There is broad confidence in Lear’s demeanor and leadership qualities and the expectation that he will bring collegiality and teamwork back to City operations.

CAPE MAY COUNTY CHIEFS OF POLICE ASSOCIATION ENDORSE LEAR FOR CAPE MAY MAYOR

In an unprecedented move, the Cape May County Chiefs of Police Association passed a unanimous resolution endorsing retired Cape May Police Lieutenant Clarence “Chuck” Lear for Mayor of Cape May in the upcoming November 8 election. Lear is opposing incumbent Mayor Ed Mahaney.

Noting Mr. Lear’s lifetime Cape May residency and his decision to raise his family in the City, the chiefs underscored his devotion to public service.

The Chiefs went on to point out Lear “holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and has served as a member of the Cape May City Police Department for 37 years in many capacities, most recently Police Lieutenant and is well respected in the law enforcement community.”

The Chiefs of Police Association rarely get involved in local political races so their unusual endorsement of Lear’s mayoral candidacy is particularly impressive and newsworthy.

The Association’s resolution stated, “The members of the Cape May County Chiefs of Police Association have full confidence in Clarence Lear to serve the residents of Cape May in an ethical manner and follow all regulations, laws and Attorney Guidelines while performing the duties of Mayor of the City of Cape May.”

Lear expressed his deep appreciation for this special endorsement by the County Police Chiefs Association. He accepts their backing as another demonstration of the willingness of supporters to help him achieve his quest for the mayor’s post. Lear pledged his tireless commitment to a fairer, responsible, respectful, compassionate Cape May where promises are honestly kept and no one ever has cause to question the integrity of City officials.
